Madam Butterfly

Madam Butterfly: A Japanese Tragedy is an opera composed by Giacomo Puccini in 1904 and premiered in 1905. The libretto was written by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, and is based on a short story by John Luther Long. The story follows the tragic love affair between an American naval officer, Lieutenant Pinkerton, and a young Japanese geisha named Cio-Cio San, also known as Madam Butterfly. Pinkerton marries Cio-Cio San, but soon leaves her to return to America. Cio-Cio San waits patiently for his return, even after giving birth to their child, but when Pinkerton finally comes back, it is with his American wife. Cio-Cio San is heartbroken and ultimately chooses to take her own life. The opera is known for its beautiful music, including the famous aria ""Un bel di vedremo"" sung by Cio-Cio San.
