'What an absorbed . . . and what an indifferent face!' he muttered. 'Elena Nikolaevna, ' he continued, raising his voice, 'allow me to tell you a little anecdote. I had a friend, and this friend also had a friend, who at first conducted himself as befits a gentleman but afterwards took to drink. So one day early in the morning, my friend meets him in the street (and by that time, note, the acquaintance has been completely dropped) meets him and sees he is drunk. My friend went and turned his back on him. But he ran up and said, "I would not be angry," says he, "if you refused to recognise me, but why should you turn your back on me? Perhaps I have been brought to this through grief. Peace to my ashes

I was then five-and-twenty, -that was a sufficient indication that I had a past, said he, beginning. My own master for some little time, I resolved to travel, -not to complete my education, as they said at the time, but to see the world. I was young, light-hearted, in good health, free from every care, with a well-filled purse; I gave no thought to the future; I indulged every whim, -in fact, I lived like a flower that expands in the sun. The idea that man is but a plant, and that its flower can only live a short time, had not yet occurred to me. "Youth," says a Russian proverb, "lives upon gilded gingerbread, which it ingenuously takes for bread; then one day even bread fails." But of what use are these digressions? I travelled from place to place, with no definite plan, stopping where it suited me, moving at once when I felt the need of seeing new faces, -nothing m

To a certain extent the neighbours were right: Alexey Sergeitch had lived in his Suhodol for almost seventy years on end, and had had hardly anything whatever to do with the existing authorities, with the police or the law-courts. "Police-courts are for the robber, and discipline for the soldier," he used to say; "but I, thank God, am neither robber nor soldier.

Rudin a Romance and A King Lear of the Steppes is a collection of two novellas written by the Russian author Ivan Turgenev. The first novella, Rudin a Romance, explores the life of a young man named Dmitry Rudin who is well-educated, charming, and idealistic. He falls in love with a young woman named Natalya, but their relationship is complicated by their different social statuses and the expectations placed upon them by their families and society. The second novella, A King Lear of the Steppes, tells the story of a wealthy landowner named Ivan Petrovich who decides to divide his estate among his three daughters. However, his decision leads to unexpected consequences as his daughters begin to fight over their inheritance and Ivan Petrovich becomes increasingly isolated and disillusioned. Both novellas are characterized by Turgenev's signature style of psychological realism, exploring the complex emotions and motivations of his characters as they navigate the social and cultural norms of 19th century Russia. Rudin a Romance and A King Lear of the Steppes are considered classic works of Russian literature and are widely studied and admired for their insights into human nature and the complexities of relationships and society.1916. Turgenieff (Turgenev), novelist, poet, and playwright, known for his detailed descriptions about everyday live in Russia in the 19th century, he portrayed realistically the peasantry and the rising intelligentsia in its attempt to move the country into a new age. Two of Turgenieffs smaller novels, they are reflective of the negative view of Russian society that pervades his work. Fathers and Sons (" "), Turgenev's most famous and enduring novel, appeared in 1862. Its leading character, Eugene Bazarov, considered the 'first Bolshevik' in Russian literature, was in turn heralded and reviled as either a glorification or a parody of the 'new men' of the 1860s. The novel examined the conflict between the older generation, reluctant to accept reforms, and the nihilistic youth. In the central character, Bazarov, Turgenev drew a classical portrait of the mid-nineteenth-century nihilist. Fathers and Sons was set during the six-year period of social ferment, from Russia's defeat in the Crimean War to the Emancipation of the Serfs. Hostile reaction to Fathers and Sons (" ") prompted Turgenev's decision to leave Russia. As a consequence he also lost the majority of his readers. Many radical critics at the time (with the notable exception of Dimitri Pisarev) did not take Fathers and Sons seriously; and, after the relative critical failure of his masterpiece,
