"Dad used to say the end of one cycle was the start of another, and the seeds of that cycle's end are planted by how we adapt to the change..." Having survived morning sickness and the end of her universe, Alice Raikes and her friends are in self-imposed exile in an alien dimension when they discover an ancient, mysterious ship that might be the key to their future -- or they might merely end up with a face full of alien wing-wong. Meanwhile, in a far off Realm, Alice's "evil twin," Katherine Hughes, is recruiting to stop an insidious threat even though she would rather shoot the better angels of her nature. She's not surprised to find out Alice is walking into a trap -- that sounds just like her, really -- but she is annoyed by how much she cares. Something is stirring in the Dark. "The start of a new Traveler age. But there are always loose ends..."

A teenaged girl wakes up one day to realize -- she doesn't know who she is, who her friends are, or where she came from. It's as if she never existed before this moment. Maybe she didn't. As Rain questions her sanity and unravels her past, she finds nothing but questions within questions. Is she real? Or was her whole life invented for her? By who? Is she even human? She's not the only person in her head either. Other distinct personalities are competing with her own. Someone knows what happened. Someone is controlling her through a haunting melody, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," played over the telephone or when she least expects it. It's just a question of how deep the rabbit hole goes. "Rain" is a story about existential dread, mental illness, found family and female friendships, and the terrifyingly open-ended challenge of defining yourself in a world that wants to tell you who you are.

Alice Raikes has a problem. Her higher self thinks she's not living up to her potential, her other selves are trying to kill her -- oh, and the universe is ending. She's also in a coma thanks to an evil robot from the future and her brother's lack of science education. So, that sucks. The End Game Culture have the Five on a leash, too, and they seem hell bent on killing she and her friends, which is weird seeing as they've never even met those guys before. You ever have one of those days? There's no time to waste. Well, there's time for a musical interlude, some weird dreams, a quick wedding, a cup of coffee, and a hot shower. But other than that. The firestorm is coming. And all she's got going for her is "the power of friendship."Hopefully, that's enough?

Alice Raikes wants to escape. Her whole life, she expected something important to happen, but she has a dead end job, lives in Texas, and is transgender to boot. Things are not going well. When the sun goes out, her first response is: "Finally." Five minutes later, the sun switches back on, and everybody acts like nothing happened. Only Alice and her friends remember the Five Minute Darkness, but they cannot explain it. When Alice discovers a mysterious silver sphere, it turns out to be an Artifact of Doom that puts her and her friends on a collision course with the mysterious Five, who have manipulated history and have a grudge against them -- for reasons Alice and her friends are unaware. Complicating things is a madwoman named Katherine who wants to kill every version of herself in existence, because reasons. Little does anyone realize the Five Minute Darkness is symptomatic of a bigger problem created by the Five, which threatens to tear their universes apart. It figures Alice's One Great Thing would be the End of the World. "Excitement, Adventure, and Really Wild Things" is Book One in the Navigator series, a sci-fi superhero space opera fantasy. (Phew!) Starting from a world similar (but not identical) to our own, it introduces our luckless "heroes" and shoves them face first into a cosmos where time travel, gender-bending, and parallel universes are par for the course. It also has an unhealthy obsession with the number five. It is anti-authoritarian, a little bit queer, and laced with geek humor.

When the world ended, Alice Raikes said: "The lives of heroes end in ashes." But what happens AFTER the war is over? AFTER the world ends? A second chance? Some kind of redemption? Maybe just a nice, long vacation? One thing is for sure, she can't go home again. Meanwhile, in another world, Jennifer Taggart, Mary Katherine Ramsey, Serena Yovino, and their friends are just trying to get through high school and deal with their more-than-ordinary problems. They're blissfully unaware of who and what is headed their way. Because even when everything ends, there are always consequences. But maybe, just maybe, there are also hamburgers. "Not For Lack of Gravitas" is Book Four in the Navigator not-a-trilogy, a series described as: "Like the Hitchhiker's Guide but with lasting emotional consequences."
