The idyllic Westerwald village of Hachenburg is the home of the four-member Kampmann family.Due to a serious illness, Heribert Kampmann, the father of the family, becomes addicted to alcohol and develops to be the tyrant of the family. When the situation seems hopeless and trying to avoid disaster, Hilde Kampmann emigrates with her sons to Canada. While Werner, 16, decides to become a priest, his younger brother follows in his father's footsteps. Having come into conflict with the law, he leaves home and takes off on a cargo ship that takes him to Africa.But even there, he quickly gets off on the wrong track.
