Beskrivelse af The Emancipated
The Emancipated is a novel by George Gissing, first published in 1890. The book follows the lives of three young women who have recently been emancipated from the constraints of Victorian society. The three women, who are all friends, are Rhoda Nunn, Mary Barfoot, and their young protege, Monica Madden. Rhoda and Mary run a boarding house for women in London, where they provide a safe haven for those who have been mistreated or oppressed by men. Monica, a former pupil of Rhoda's, comes to live with them after escaping from an unhappy marriage. The novel explores the themes of gender roles, marriage, and the changing social landscape of late Victorian England. Gissing's characters are complex and nuanced, and he delves deeply into their inner lives and struggles. Rhoda, for example, is fiercely independent and committed to her work, but she also struggles with her own desires and emotions. Mary, on the other hand, is more pragmatic and businesslike, but she too has her own demons to contend with. Monica, meanwhile, is young and inexperienced, but she is also intelligent and determined to make her own way in the world.Throughout the book, Gissing examines the various ways in which women were oppressed and marginalized in Victorian society, and he argues for their right to self-determination and independence. The Emancipated is a powerful and thought-provoking work that continues to resonate with readers today.A divine evening, softly warm, dim-glimmering. The dusty road ran on between white trunks of plane-trees; when the station and the houses near it were left behind, no other building came in view. To the left of the road, hidden behind its long earth-rampart, lay the dead city; far beyond rose the dark shape of Vesuvius, crested with beacon-glow, a small red fire, now angry, now murky, now for a time extinguished. The long rumble of the train died away, and there followed silence absolute, scarcely broken for a few minutes by a peasant singing in the distance, the wailing song so often heard in the south of Italy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
