Beskrivelse af The Emancipated
The Emancipated is a novel written by George Gissing, first published in 1890. The story is set in London during the late 19th century and follows the lives of several characters who are struggling to find their place in society. The main character, Osmond Waymark, is a young man who has recently been released from prison and is trying to start a new life. He meets several other characters, including a young woman named Lydia who is trying to escape from her oppressive and abusive father, and a group of artists and intellectuals who are trying to break free from the constraints of Victorian society. As they navigate their way through the social and economic challenges of their time, the characters must confront their own desires and ambitions, as well as the expectations and limitations imposed upon them by their class, gender, and social status. The Emancipated is a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of the themes of freedom, identity, and social justice, and remains a classic of Victorian literature.A divine evening, softly warm, dim-glimmering. The dusty road ran on between white trunks of plane-trees; when the station and the houses near it were left behind, no other building came in view. To the left of the road, hidden behind its long earth-rampart, lay the dead city; far beyond rose the dark shape of Vesuvius, crested with beacon-glow, a small red fire, now angry, now murky, now for a time extinguished. The long rumble of the train died away, and there followed silence absolute, scarcely broken for a few minutes by a peasant singing in the distance, the wailing song so often heard in the south of Italy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
