When strong but socially awkward WASP boy meets gorgeous, socially assured Italian girl at a summer tennis camp, what do you think will happen? At first, nothing, as he lacks the courage to ask her to play. But once he screws up the necessary courage, they start to have some amazing matches, some lasting longer than the average Wimbledon men's final. Fred and Gloria's passion for tennis is just beginning to evolve into a passion for each other when tragedy strikes Gloria's family, and she breaks off with him. Eventually they lose track of each other. But in full middle age, they meet up again, when Fred, now an aspiring novelist, takes his book to Dalton's Literary Agency and Gloria, Dalton's star agent, is assigned to sell it. She winds up selling both it and two later novels, earning fame and fortune both for Fred and for Dalton's. But do the two ever manage to get back together again?
