Lakeview is a beautiful town that is both unique and even peculiar. Unique because the town has no name. And yet, it has a name that it draws from the lake. Peculiar because of that funny synergy that unites the town and the lake. Without this curious synergy, the town would not exist. Yet without it, the lake would not exist. How do we separate the lake from the town or the town from the lake without inflicting mutual damage to both? This reminds us of that beauty from W.B. Yeats: How can we know the dancer from the dance?

  • - How and Why Avoiding Exposures to Toxic Chemicals and Other Sources of Oxidative Stress, the Cause of Most Disease, Lowers the Odds of Getting Sick
    af Harold I Zeliger
    318,95 kr.

A Pound of Prevention for a Healthier Life shows the connection between oxidative stress and the onset of virtually all disease and discusses the causes of oxidative stress induced disease and ways to prevent it. The book includes a unique questionnaire for predicting disease onset in seemingly healthy people, and shows how steps taken to prevent any one disease may prevent many other unrelated diseases. Dr. Harold I. Zeliger, a chemical toxicologist who has been researching the causes of non-communicable diseases for more than 40 years, demonstrates how elevated oxidative stress is responsible for attacks on virtually all body organs and systems and how it triggers the onset of numerous diseases, including ADHD, autism, heart disease, respiratory disease, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, cancer and numerous others. The many sources of oxidative stress include not only exposures to toxic chemicals such as pesticides, air pollutants, PCBs and organic solvents, but also to radiation, tobacco smoke, eating some foods, pharmaceutical drug use, illnesses a person already has, emotional stress and others. Zeliger's research shows how elevated oxidative stress need not come from a single source, but can come from multiple sources, and that it is total oxidative stress, no matter what the source or sources, that causes disease. The Oxidative Stress Index, which can be individually arrived at from the questionnaire in the book, allows the reader to determine his or her oxidative stress level, which sources are responsible for it, and what actions can be taken to reduce it and lower the likelihood of disease onset.

  • - Christian Kindness as an Antidote to Cultural Crudeness
af William G & Jr Covington
    193,95 kr.

Cultural critics frequently point out how rude people have become. The need for patience, consideration and kindness is the mindset that provides the antidote this this cultural dysfunction. Christian virtues that enhance the quality for everyone, the initiator and receivers is discussed in this book. Each chapter includes a reflection section that helps one apply the principles covered. Is it credible to claim that any reader of a book who applies the contents could enhance the quality of his own life as well as that of others with whom he interacts? This book examines issues that hold the potential for such direct far-reaching aims. Rather than curse the darkness of uncivil behavior in culture, this book shines light in providing an antidote that enhances the personal reputation of one interacting in the public sphere while making other people feel better that their lives have been touched in the process. Character is built on feeding one's mind the proper intellectual and spiritual content. Healthy relationships grow out of win/win exchanges. Having something of value to offer others grows out of an altruistic heart. Actions grow from thoughts. Mutually beneficial dealings leads to a higher quality of life for everyone involved. Virtues taught by Jesus have been the antidote to self-serving narcissistic thinking everywhere they're been applied. Fulfillment comes from extending one's focus beyond self-gratification. Each chapter ends with a series of reflection questions which helps a person gain perspective on how these principles apply to him personally and how they can be applied for a higher standard of living for self and others.

    af Kourosh Nazari
    298,95 kr.

For centuries, one principle has stood above all others in the medical field: First, do no harm. But has our basic healthcare lost this vital philosophy in its pursuit of advancement and profit? Follow the journey of medicine from its earliest beginnings at the dawn of humanity to the incredible technological advances of the 21st century. By examining key figures and events, this book's focus on the rationales of pioneering practitioners and the philosophies behind major discoveries sets it apart from current medical and historical literature for both providers and consumers of healthcare. In the age of unprecedented advancements, the evolution of medicine and its underlying philosophies has been cast aside for the pursuit of the next, best development. In the search to provide the best care, human history has had great triumphs but also great horrors. It is important in our healthcare pursuits, both as patient and practitioner, to remember that history and examine how today's medicine fits within its historical progression.

  • - Embracing the Healing Spirit Between and Within Us
    af Vincent L Perri
    248,95 kr.

The Healing Spirit explores the idea that there is healing in dialogue. Using examples from Judaic, Christian and Buddhist philosophies and drawing on his personal and professional experiences, Dr. Perri explains how he believes the healing spirit emerges when two people unconditionally encounter each other. Introducing his concepts of the invisible matrix, archetypal language, and the naked essentials of relation he draws on the works of Martin Buber, Carl G. Jung and Abraham Joshua Heschel and their germinal contribution to the topic. The Healing Spirit can be a valuable guide to anyone in the healing or helping professions or anyone who simply wishes to help another. The Healing Spirit explores many of the personal encounters of people in the depths of sorrow, and how meaningful interpersonal dialogue generated the essence of spirit in their lives. Dr. Perri embraces the idea that spirit emerges both within and between us when spirit is beckoned. It is the spirit that heals. It is The Healing Spirit.

  • - Predicate-Equating Cognition and Its Role in Communication
    af David W Shave
    133,95 kr.

This book introduces the concept of the "unconscious entity" and reveals it as the most important concept in psychology. The book begins by presenting that the basic emotional need of humans is the need to be emotionally comfortable. Anything, that makes us emotionally uncomfortable, is a frustration of our basic emotional need, that then produces anger. The bigger the frustration, the more anger is produced. If that anger is not immediately expressed, it becomes repressed, and then stored in our mind as "unconscious entity," making any unwanted feeling we have, more unwanted.Unconscious entity arises from our unexpressed anger. It manifests itself as unwanted feelings. The feeling we least want is the very feeling most likely to be produced by our unexpressed anger. To reduce the intensity of an unwanted feeling, or to remove it completely, we must convert the unconscious entity, in our mind, back to expressed anger, which we can do, unconsciously, when we talk to a listener about what we dislike, or hate. What we dislike, or hate, will be unconsciously equated with an unconsciously perceived part of our listener. The anger is then directly expressed to that part and will be metaphorically hidden. This reveals a new dimension in human communication that has the capacity to cure psychogenic illnesses.Anger, arising from our stored unconscious entity, can also be reduced when it is expressed, inwardly, to ourselves, as in any hard work, exercise, or self-punishment, or by punishment inflicted by others. Reducing our unconscious entity makes us less emotionally uncomfortable, which is the same as making us more emotionally comfortable. That meets our basic emotional need indirectly. This book shows how we unconsciously hide our expressed anger, in our talking to a perceived listener. We do it by utilizing unconscious predicate-equating that this book shows, for the first time anywhere, is a prominent cognition of humans, and not limited to, or being diagnostic of, schizophrenia, as psychology and psychiatry now believe. It reveals the hidden and real cause for homelessness, PTSD, pedophilia, and why people senselessly kill as in mass killings. This book is a "must read," not only for anyone associated, in any way, with psychology or psychiatry, but anyone interested in the origin of their own unwanted feelings, and wanting to rid themselves of them.

In this era of advanced technology keeping students' attention often becomes difficult. Teachers need to find new ways to create interest. In writing classes, choosing a topic that involves students is a priority. A new genre, Tourism Writing, is an innovative and effective means of teaching students composition. It can fill this need.Tourism Writing focuses on a particular place or event, provides photos and information on nearby points of interest, and directly invites visitors. This book provides an understanding of how Tourism Writing benefits people in all areas of life. This transfers to classroom assignments when students are asked to write a poem in this genre and they are given lists of possible topics, but they also have the option to choose their own place or event. It becomes a learning experience as many are amazed at their ability to write a poem and intrigued by the history they learn while researching and they treasure their photos used for illustration. Such poems were entered in the annual Poetry Writing Contest at Faulkner University. In the process, students' communication and research skills were enhanced. They learned the history of their own area. This hands-on process is rewarding to teach. The plan is to add prose assignments on Tourism Writing to the classroom curriculum in the future. The possibilities for Tourism Writing are widespread.
