This work provides detailed descriptions of the coats of arms of 275 Virginia families, often including descriptions of crests and mottoes. The author also inserts, to differing degrees, individual names, occupations, accomplishments, information from wills and probate, dates of death and marriage, and other genealogical information. This work provides a basic foundation and a fundamental source for beginning your genealogical research into Sumner County, Tennessee. The author follows an outline used by many authors of the early 20th Century, by summarizing the early exploration and settlement, topography, formation of the government, local officials, land owners, and participation in the various wars, including the Civil War. In addition to the information on the featured families of Bledsoe, Cage and Douglass, Mr. Cisco also provides genealogical material on the following families: Anderson, Barrow, Barry, Bate, Bell, Bertinatti, Blackmore, Belmont, Bowen, Bowie, Breckenridge, Campbell, Carmack, Carr, Cisco, Clark, Desha, Donaldson, Ellis, Fulton, Gaines, Garth, Guild, Gwin, Hall, Hallum, Hammond, Hatton, Head, Judd, Lauderdale, Lindsey, Malone, Mansker, Martin, McKendree, Morgan, Morris, Odom, Parker, Peyton, Pickett, Read, Rogan, Rogers, Rutherford, Sanders, Sharkey, Shelby, Scurry, Smith, Spencer, Trousdale, Vanderbilt, Walton, Weatherred, Williams, Wilson, Winchester, and Wynne. The Virginia county of Augusta originally extended from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Mississippi River, east and west, and from the Great Lakes on the north to the northern boundary of the present state of Tennessee on the south. Like many histories of this era, the author addresses early exploration and settlement of the area, the first County Court, the various Indian wars, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and the Reconstruction period. Mr. Waddell also devotes an entire chapter to the Scotch-Irish, who were the earliest settlers; and up to the time of the Revolution, very few persons of any other ethnic group came to live in the county. For the historian, this is an informative and descriptive account of early Augusta County; for the genealogist, the narrative provides a wealth of biographical and genealogical sketches of early families. Some of the families discussed include: Adams, Alexander, Anderson, Baldwin, Baxter, Bell, Blackburn, Bowyer, Breckenridge, Brown, Cameron, Campbell, Christian, Craig, Crawford, Cummings, Cunningham, Doak, Fleming, Floyd, Gamble, Graham, Hamilton, Harrison, Hays, Jones, Koiner, Lewis, Lyle, McClanahan, McDowell, McKee, Mathews, Moffett, Moore, Nelson, Poage, Preston, Smith, Stuart, Tate, Trimble, Waddell, and Wilson. Softcover, (1902), 2011, Index, 556 pp.

This book was first published in 1921, following the discovery of previously unknown manuscript records from the period immediately preceding the Revolutionary War. The collection is interesting in its appeal to historian, antiquarian and genealogist because of the obscurity of the manuscript as well as its value as an index of the approximately 2,000 individuals serving in that influential body of men in the Old Dominion known as Justices of the County Courts. In the manuscript are represented, in 253 lists of names, sixty- one counties, the whole number existing in 1775. They were Accomac, Albemarle, Amelia, Amherst, Augusta, Bedford, Berkeley, Botetourt, Brunswick, Buckingham, Caroline, Charles City, Charlotte, Chesterfield, Culpeper, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Dunmore (subsequently Shenandoah), Elizabeth City, Essex, Fairfax, Fauquier, Fincastle (subsequently Montgomery, Washington and Kentucky), Frederick, Goochland, Gloucester, Halifax, Hampshire, Hanover. Henrico, Isle of Wight, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Louisa, Loudoun, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Middlesex, Nansemond, New Kent, Norfolk, Northampton, Northumberland, Orange, Pittsylvania, Prince Edward, Prince George, Prince William, Princess Anne, Richmond, Southampton, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Surry, Sussex, Warwick, Westmoreland and York. Softcover, (1921), repr. 2011, Index, 117 pp.

Realizing the importance of land conveyance records to any genealogist who may attempt to write biography and knowing that the Rockingham County deed records were partly burned in 1864, thereby effacing many deeds, the authors of this book have made an abstract and index of land surveys of Augusta and Rockingham counties from 1751 to 1791. There is recorded in these abstracts the name of the person for whom the survey was made, the location of the land, and the name of the owner or owners of the adjoining land. These surveys were made for original land patents by Thomas Lewis, surveyor for Augusta County, and later for Rockingham County, from April 23, 1751, to February 22, 1782. The entries from 1782 to 1791 were made by Alexander Herring, surveyor for Rockingham County. The assistants were John Poage, James Trrimble, Wm. Preston, Andrew Lewis, Gawn Hamilton, John Lincoln, and Ralph Lofftus. There are approximately 2,000 individuals cited in the text, and approximately 4,000 listed in multiple references in the index.

The abstracted information includes the dates of the instrument and probate, names of wife and children, and names of witnesses. Following are the counties from which these records have been abstracted: Barren, Bourbon, Bullitt, Caldwell, Christian, Clark, Crittenden, Daviess, Fayette, Franklin, Gallatin, Garrard, Greene, Hardin, Harrison, Henderson, Henry, Hopkins, Jefferson, Jessamine, Knox, Lincoln, Livingston, Logan, Madison, McCracken, Mercer, Muhlenberg, Nelson, Nicholas, Ohio, Scott, Shelby, Spencer, Todd, Warren, Washington, and Woodford. With a Notice of the Church at Conewago, by A. Boyd Hamilton. The history of Old Hanover Church is a wonderful genealogical resource for those descendants of early residents of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, covering the period 1735-1877. In his research, the author gathered information from the minutes of the Presbyteries of Donegal and of Carlisle; the records of the Boards of Trustees; records from past pastors; tax lists; and other sources of historical and genealogical data. In addition to annual church summaries, the books contains numerous lists, including tax lists, assessments, births, deaths, marriages, baptisms, tombstone information, church membership rolls, etc. A further contribution is the inclusion of Notes relating to a Congregation of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, of which little has been known.

The First Census of the United States (1790) comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, during the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the returns for several states were destroyed. However, the census records for Maryland survived and were available for this 1907 publication. In March 1790, Maryland had a population of 319,728, out of the Nation's total population of approximately 3,920,000. The information provided in this census includes the Name of Head of Family, the number of free white males of 16 years and upward in the household, the number of free white males and under living in the household, the number of free white females, all other free persons, and the number of slaves. Populations are also recorded for Towns and Counties.

This volume was originally compiled between 1859 and 1860 from information housed at the British Archives, and contains numerous lists and ship entries of the names of individual ship passengers, who were some of America's earliest emigrants. The method and content of documentation varies among the numerous vessels undertaking the voyages, but often includes the names of family members, the occupation of the passenger, age, and the reason for the voyage. In most every entry, the date, the port of embarkation, and the port of debarkation is included. Most of the lists and documents contained in this work are dated in the early 17th Century. Softcover, (1860), repr. 2010, Index, 151 pp.

This is a statewide index to the mortality schedules for these three census years combined. The information contained in these schedule are not only helpful with your genealogical research, it also potentially provides genetic clues with symptoms and disease. Nearly all of the information on the schedules is included. The order in which each entry is set forth is as follows: name of deceased, age, sex, race, free or slave (1850 & 1860 schedules only), marital status, place of birth of deceased, place of birth of deceased's parents (1880 schedules only), occupation (usually omitted by enumerator), month of death, cause of death, county and census year. Note that each census year was the year ended June 1, so the only deaths recorded on these schedules were those occurring in the twelve month periods ended June 1 of 1850, 1860, and 1880. The First Census of the United States in 1790 comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, during the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the returns for several states were destroyed, including those for Virginia. However, the United States Government, with the cooperation of the Virginia State Library, published the "Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1790; Records of the State Enumerations 1782 to 1785: Virginia," in an attempt to partially reconstruct Virginia's 1790 Census. This book is a critical supplement to the United States Census of 1790. It consists of an alphabetical listing of approximately 34,000 taxpayers in Virginia that were not included in the 1790 Census, and whose names were compiled from personal property tax lists from 35 individual Virginia counties. Softcover, (1940), repr. 2006, Alphabetical Listing, 146 pp.

Genealogies of some of the families who settled Concord in the 1600s, and their descendants, can be found in this comprehensive text, which spans some two hundred and fifty years. The first part of the book lays out the genealogical information in tabular form, making fact-checking quick and easy. These tables include thousands of names plus the dates for births, marriages, and deaths, as well as listing the places where births and deaths occurred. The second half of the book contains more than 150 biographical sketches, which offer more 'meaty' genealogical information: ancestry, family details, occupations and avocations, land and other possessions, personal qualities, and the occasional anecdote. Just some of the early family names included are Adams, Ames, Austin, Blake, Blodgett, Barrett, Blood, Brown, Brooks, Bulkeley, Buttrick, Campbell, Capron, Casey, Churchill, Cleveland, Cogswell, Crosby, Conant, Dakin, Damon, Davis, Dodge, Dole, Eaton, Edwards, Emerson, Fairbanks, Farmer, Farnsworth, Farrar, Fletcher, Flint, French, Fuller, Garfield, Gates, Giles, Gilmore, Goddard, Green(e), Hartwell, Hayward, Heal, Heard, Holden, Houghton, Hosmer, Howard, Howe, Hubbard, Hunt, Jarvis, Jewett, Johnson, Jones, Jordan, Keeler, Kelly, Kendall, Kimball, Kirkpatrick, Ladd, Lane, Lawrence, Lee, Leete, Lewis, Lincoln, Longley, Lord, Lyman, Mansfield, Marion, Mead, Meriam, Minott, Montgomery, Moore, Morse, Morton, Nash, Nay, Newcomb, Nichols, Nourse, Nutting, Oddie, Oliver, Orcott, Osborn(e), Osgood, Page, Palmer, Parker, Phillips, Potter, Prescott, Proctor, Putnam, Reed, Rice, Richardson, Robbins, Roberts, Robinson, Roullanrd, Russell, Safford, Sanders, Sargent, Savage, Sawyer, Schuster, Scovil, Shapley, Shattuck, Sherman, Slocomb, Smith, Spaulding, Staples, Stone, Stow, Stowell, Strong, Swain, Sweet, Symonds, Taylor, Thayer, Todd, Tolman, Tower, Turner, Tuttle, Tyler, Vale, Van Dorn, Van Vorris, Wait, Walker, Wallace, Warren, Webber, Wells, Weston, Wetherbee, Wheeler, White, Whitney, Wilson, Willard, Wood, Wright, Wyman and Young. This second edition of the present work offers descriptions of nearly two thousand coats of arms, with the name of the first of the family in America, the date of his arrival and place of settlement, and, in the majority of instances, the town or country whence he came. The plan of the work resembles in the main that of Burke's General Armory in England, except that the latter includes only the arms of persons of British ancestry, whereas this book goes farther, including the arms of those whose ancestors came from Continental Europe. Mr. Crozier asserts the descriptions of the arms, and the data, carefully collated and verified, have been inserted only when actual examination of the necessary records has shown the family to be entitled to the distinction. Softcover, (1904), repr. 2009, 2011, Alphabetical, Dictionary of Terms, 156 pp.
