Disease, accidents and battle injuries in foreign climes have been the lot of naval surgeons throughout history and fortunately many accounts of extraordinary experiences survive, having been meticulously recorded in journals. This is one such example, the journal of Naval Surgeon Charles Courtney who served in the China Squadron in the mid-nineteenth century. It is a unique and hitherto unpublished account of his travels and observations in a rapidly changing and dramatic era in Chinese history. The original journal is in the form of a leather bound book written in longhand that documents visits to ports along the China coast from Canton to Shanghai and also describes a short visit to Japan to install the first ever British Consul to Hakodate. The journal is an eyewitness account of significant historical events including the Canton campaign during the Second Opium War and of the failed assault on the Taku forts in 1859. In this brief period Courtney operated on sailors with dreadful injuries under battle conditions as well as keeping the ship's crew in the best possible state of health, literally 'fighting fit'. In addition he was required to manage a wide variety of illnesses such as malaria, typhoid, dysentery, typhus and the ever present 'gleet' and 'pox'. Despite these onerous duties, Courtney found time to make regular entries to his journal which describe in detail the topography, medical environment, people and customs encountered along the coasts of China and Japan. The journal also contains essays on opium smoking and foot binding and also a treatise on Chinese medical literature written together with renowned sinologist Alexander Wylie during Courtney's sojourn in Shanghai. This treatise is one of the earliest contributions by westerners to catalogue and acknowledge the contributions of Chinese medical scholars to our understanding of the medical sciences. Having been discovered by chance, the journal is a rich resource for those with an interest in Chinese, naval or medical history.

Born in Birmingham, Al May 10, 1954, my family moved to Alexandria, La. when I was about 10 years old. It was at that time when I developed a strong passion for gospel music. At the age of 12 I recorded my first solo album. Before my 16th birthday I was performing with a full time professional group. I finished my last two years of high school on the road. During this period I managed to juggle schedules and attend LSU once I had graduated high school. I climbed to the top of the southern gospel music field. I ended up living in Nashville traveling across the US for over ten years. At the age of 26 I decided to end my career in gospel music. It was at that time when I started mastering the art of sales, motivation, inspiration, and leadership. I realized a few years ago that the issue of excess worry was robbing me of peace of mind. That was when I decided to write this book, hoping to find an answer regarding worry. As I started writing and reflecting back on my life, I discovered that worry was only one of the issues. I found that we have to maintain a well balanced life in every aspect if we are to have peace of mind. Looking back on all the battles won and all the battles lost, there were lessons learned along the way. With the support of loving family, friends, and great teachers I came up with my 12 Step Program to peace each day. I have found that life is not that complicated, it's we as humans that complicate things. For me simplicity is the best way to live. One of my favorite quotes is "To be simple is to be Great"-Ralph Waldo Emerson. I believe in setting goals and having the things we want in life but my definition of success has nothing to do with material rewards. My definition of success is "Peace of Mind Everyday". Once you live in a state of peace each day, everything else will follow. One definition of passion is "boundless enthusiasm". At this stage of the game my passion is to share with as many people possible steps they can take to be happy and be the best they can be

This monograph concerns the history of the Ruttonjee Sanatorium, a hospital in Hong Kong originally built in 1843 as the Seamen's Hospital which subsequently became the Royal Naval Hospital in 1873 until the Second World War. Following the war the hospital was refurbished by the Hong Kong Anti-Tuberculsosis Association under the Chairmanship of Mr J H Ruttonjee and served as a specialist centre for the treatment of tuberculosis from 1949 to 1991, having been renamed the Ruttonjee Sanatorium. The Columban Sisters, a missionary order, provided administrative, medical and nursing expertise for 40 years. In the field of chest diseases and tuberculosis, the Sisters contributed significantly to teaching and research and published more than 100 scientific papers, earning international recognition for their unique contribution. In Hong Kong more than 150,000 people have died from tuberculosis since the year 1900, however in recent years control of the disease has been achieved. In this monograph, Dr Michael Humphries traces the history and remarkable contribution of the Ruttonjee Sanatorium and the Hong Kong Government Chest Service to the treatment and control of tuberculosis, the lessons of which have influenced clinical management of tuberculosis worldwide.
