In the mid-1990s the Census Office released for the first time 1 per cent and 2 per cent Samples of Anonymised Records (SARs) from the 1991 British Census. This study presents the results of the first analysis of labour market data from the new SARs.

In this title, Hakim presents a multi-disciplinary theory for explaining and predicting current and future patterns of women's choice between employment and family work. Preference theory is developed specifically to explain women's behaviour and choices.
