The book is a comprehensive study of the Araucarieae family of plants, which includes both living and extinct species. The author provides a detailed analysis of the morphology, anatomy, and ecology of these plants, as well as their evolutionary history and distribution. The book is divided into several chapters, each of which focuses on a specific aspect of the Araucarieae family. The first chapter provides an overview of the family and its classification, while the subsequent chapters delve into the anatomy and morphology of the plants, their reproductive biology, and their biogeography. The book also includes a section on the extinct members of the family, with a detailed discussion of their fossil records and evolutionary relationships. The Sedgwick Prize for the best essay on a geological subject was instituted in memory of Adam Sedgwick, the geologist who introduced Darwin to geology in walking tours of north Wales, but later opposed his theories. One of its most eminent winners was A. C. Seward (1863-1941), then a young lecturer in botany at Cambridge. He combined the study of botany with geology in his research on what the age and location of fossilised flora can reveal about the climates of different geological periods. The author of the standard early twentieth-century textbook in the field, Fossil Plants for Students of Botany and Geology (1898-1919), he served as Professor of Botany at Cambridge, Master of Downing College and Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University. This Sedgwick Prize essay sets out the state of knowledge in the field in 1892 and was the foundation of a lifetime's work in palaeobotany.

First published in 1943, this was the last book of the eminent botanist and geologist Sir Albert Seward, who completed the manuscript three days before his death in 1941. The book was intended to be a useful and simply worded guide to geology for the general reader.
