The year 2022 has been designated the Year of Romanticism in Poland. An even two hundred years have passed since the first publication of Adam Mickiewicz's Ballads and Romances - a collection of lyrics which has the same significance for Polish literature as Wordsworth and Coleridge's Lyrical Ballads has for the English. Poems of love, the supernatural, and the exotic, Mickiewicz's first volume of poetry achieved a level of sublimity that immediately set him at the head of all Polish writers - a position he sustained throughout his life with his lyrical, narrative, dramatic, and epic poetry, and which he continues to hold today. In cooperation with the Polish Cultural Institute of London, Glagoslav brings out an anniversary edition of Mickiewicz's Ballads and Romances in the English translation of Charles S. Kraszewski. The collection includes all the poems of the 1822 edition, plus the ballads added shortly before the poet's death to the 1852, Leipzig edition.This publication is generously supported by the Polish Cultural Institute in London.

In 1966 Poland will celebrate the thousandth anniversary of her acceptance of Christianity, the first major event to bring Poland on to the modern European scene from the shade of prehistory. Looking back over the past millennium, Poles are now analysing their history, reassessing their cultural achievements, and looking for directives for the future. When the civilized world was out-growing the boundaries for Europe, Poland was in bondage. It is time that after 1,000 years of its existence knowledge of Polish culture should not be confined to one part of Europe but should extend over much more of the globe. The Millennium of Christian Poland Celebration Committee in Canada, sponsors of this volume, is aiming to make Polish cultural achievements and information about Poland available to the Canadian people. As the first of its publications the Committee presents an English translation of Pan Tadeusz, a land-mark in Polish literature. Pan Tadeusz or The Last Foray in Lithuania is the greatest epic poem of Poland's greatest poet, Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855). It was written in exile and published in Paris in 1833, during the author's long absence from his native country because of his patriotic sympathies. The scene of the poem is Lithuania on the eve of Napoleon's expedition into Russia in 1812 and its subject is a family feud among the country gentry; Mickiewicz gives vivid pictures of the life of the old Polish nobility and gentry, their manners and past times, their patriotic enthusiasms and his descriptions of the Lithuanian landscape especially have kept his poem in the hearts of generations of readers. The poem ends in the spirit of hope caused in the heart of every Pole by the French onslaught on Russia. The original poem is in rhymed Alexandrine couplets, and the translation in the English heroic couplet; this is the first translation in rhymed English verse to be published. Watson Kirckconnell's gifts as translator and poet are well known, and this publication is a splendid opportunity to become acquainted with one of the world's great epics. Dr. William J. Rose provides a helpful historical introduction.

PAN TADEUSZ tells the story of two feuding families and the young lovers caught in the middle. Adding to the intrigue, Napoleon is camped in Warsaw, preparing to attack the occupying Russian forces. Woven into the historic tapestry are memorable characters such as the sultry coquette, virtuous maiden, besotted young officer, corrupt Russian soldiers, fearless Polish swordsmen, wise old men and even a mysterious monk, who prays piously even as he shoots with deadly aim. Adam Mickiewicz (1798 - 1855) wrote "Pan Tadeusz" while exiled in France. His homeland was occupied by Russia, where he would not have had the freedom to write this ode to Polish history and heritage. His great work remains today required reading in Polish schools. This English version was translated by George Rapall Noyes in 1917. He wrote it in prose rather than the original poem structure, but it retains all the grand sweep of historical detail, rich cultural references and romantic passions of a time when Napoleon coveted Russia and Poles desired their freedom.

The book was first published in June 1834 in Paris and is considered by many to be the last great epic poem in European literature.  It is a tale of mystery, mistaken identity and patriotism set the days before Napoleon's invasion of Russia. The story takes place over the course of five days in 1811 and two days in 1812, at a time in history, when Poland-Lithuania had already been divided between the armies of Russia, Prussia, and Austria and erased from the political map of Europe, although in 1807, just before the story begins, Napoleon had established a satellite Duchy of Warsaw in the Prussian partition, in existence until the Congress of Vienna held in the aftermath of Napoleonic defeat. The place is situated within the Russian partition, in the village of Soplicowo; the country estate of the Soplica clan. Pan Tadeusz recounts the story of two feuding noble families, and the love between Tadeusz Soplica (the title character) of one family, and Zosia of the other. Another sub-plot involves a spontaneous revolt of the local inhabitants against the occupying Russian garrison. Since Mickiewicz published his poem as an exile in Paris, he was free of the Russian censors to talk openly about the occupation. This is the first major translation of this epic poem since the 1993 by one of the great translators of the Polish language Christopher Adam Zakrzewski

Szczytowe dzieło polskiego romantyzmu, wykładnia XIX-wiecznego patriotyzmu i mesjanizmu. Utwór dramatyczny złożony z luźno powiązanych ze sobą tematycznie części (II, IV, III) oraz cz. I - niedokończonej, wydanej pośmiertnie. Wątki autobiograficzne przeplatają się tu z tematyką narodowowyzwoleńczą i motywem walki z rosyjskim zaborcą. Klamrą całości jest pogański rytuał dziadów obchodzony w okresie chrześcijańskich listopadowych świąt zmarłych.Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855) - wybitny polski pisarz-wizjoner, obok Juliusza Słowackiego i Zygmunta Krasińskiego określany jako wieszcz narodowy. Był twórcą poetyckim, dramatycznym i prozatorskim. Aktywnie działał na arenie politycznej. Mickiewicz był członkiem i założycielem Towarzystwa Filomatycznego oraz oddanym mesjanistą związany z Kołem Sprawy Bożej Andrzeja Towiańskiego. Do jego najważniejszych dzieł należą zbiory poezji: "Ballady i romanse", "Sonety Krymskie", poemat "Konrad Wallenrod", dramat "Dziady" i epopeja narodowa "Pan Tadeusz". Dramaty Mickiewicza w całej Europie porównywano do dzieł Byrona i Goethego.
