At the core of this book lies the relation between Power (as socio-political phenomenon) and the novel (as literary discourse). It shows that, in a society facing the excess of power in its various forms, novelistic fiction mediates knowledge about societal Power structures and uses specific strategies to subvert and denounce them. The first part of the study is theoretical: it presents some of the most prominent theories of Power, from Plato, Machiavelli, Nietzsche to Weber, Dahl, Lukes, Parsons, Bourdieu or Foucault. After offering a critical approach to the concepts of Power defined in the social, political and philosophical fields, it articulates the relations of Power imprinted in literary discourse within a typology of four categories. In the second part of the book, this taxonomy of Power is applied to four key novels in the context of Romanian "e;literary crossroads"e;, showing how novelistic fiction not only assume a critical and subversive position against the excess of Power, but also unveils our fragility when experiencing History.

This book proposes that there is no better, no more complex way to access a community, a society, an era and its cultures than through literature. For millennia, literature from a wide variety of geocultural areas has gathered knowledge about life, about survival, and about living together, without either falling into discursive or disciplinary specializations or functioning as a regulatory mechanism for cultural knowledge. Literature is able to offer its readers knowledge through direct participation in the form of step-by-step intellectual and affective experiences. Through this ability, it can reach and affect audiences across great spatial and temporal distances. Literature - what different times and cultures have been able to understand as such in a broad sense - has always been characterized by its transareal and transcultural origins and effects. It is the product of many logics, and it teaches us to think polylogically rather than monologically. Literature is an experiment in living, and living in a state of experimentation. About the author Ottmar Ette has been Chair of Romance Literature at the University of Potsdam, Germany, since 1995. He is Honorary Member of the Modern Language Association of America (MLA) (elected in 2014), member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (elected in 2013), and regular member of the Academia Europaea (since 2010).

A travers un corpus de pieces arabes provenant du Liban, de l'Egypte, de la Tunisie et du Maroc, composees pour la plupart en arabe dialectal, ce travail entend definir la place de Moliere dans la genese du theatre arabe moderne et verifier si les adaptations ont joue un role politique en contribuant a forger l'identite nationale dans les pays arabes. Est-ce un simple fruit du hasard si le nationalisme emerge dans le monde arabe presque parallelement au theatre? Moliere et le theatre arabe a recu en 2016 le Prix d'encouragement a la recherche de l'Academie des sciences d'outre-mer (Paris).

The early modern and modern cultural world in the West would be unthinkable without Petrarch and Boccaccio. Despite this fact, there is still no scholarly contribution entirely devoted to analysing their intellectual revolution. Internationally renowned scholars are invited to discuss and rethink the historical, intellectual, and literary roles of Petrarch and Boccaccio between the great model of Dante¿s encyclopedia and the ideas of a double or multifaceted culture in the era of Italian Renaissance Humanism. In his lyrical poems and Latin treatises, Petrarch created a cultural pattern that was both Christian and Classical, exercising immense influence on the Western World in the centuries to come. Boccaccio translated this pattern into his own vernacular narratives and erudite works, ultimately claiming as his own achievement the reconstructed unity of the Ancient Greek and Latin world in his contemporary age. The volume reconsiders Petrarch¿s and Boccacciös heritages from different perspectives (philosophy, theology, history, philology, paleography, literature, theory), and investigates how these heritages shaped the cultural transition between the end of the Middle Ages and the early modern era, as well as European identity.

Der Problemnexus zwischen Avantgarde und Faschismus, fur Italien und Deutschland bereits grotenteils erforscht, wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit erstmals in bezug auf die spanische Literatur untersucht. Die Frage nach der reaktionaren Moderne erschliet einen vergessenen Sektor der spanischen Erzahlprosa, der, quer zur gangigen Epochengliederung, die Leerstelle zwischen Vorkriegsavantgarde und Nachkriegsrealismus fullt. Zunachst werden die weitgehend unbekannten Autoren prasentiert: Ernesto Gimenez Caballero (1899-1988), Vordenker des Faschismus in Spanien, Tomas Borras (1891-1976), Felipe Ximenez de Sandoval (1903-1978), Samuel Ros (1904-1945) und Antonio de Obregon (1909-1985). Ohne reduktionistische Thesenbildung verfolgt die Studie in unmittelbarer Auseinandersetzung mit den Texten den Proze der ideologischen Umwertung bzw. Funktionalisierung avantgardistischer Diskursformen und Stilelemente (Pirandellismus, Expressionismus, Asthetik der Grausamkeit). Inhaltlich manifestiert sich die Entwicklung von der 'Vanguardia' zur prafaschistischen 'Avanzada' in der Darstellung von Identitatsproblematik und Gesellschaftsbezug. Ausfuhrungen zu Aspekten der faschistischen 'Asthetisierung' des Politischen (Walther Benjamin; Mission des Kunstlers, Dandysmus, Stilbegriff) beschlieen den Band.

Italienische Literaten des 19. Jahrhunderts haben das Diktum von Mailand als einem "e;Babylo minima"e; - im Gegensatz zum "e;Babylo maxima"e; Paris - gepragt und damit die besondere Rolle Mailands im Italien des 19. Jahrhunderts wie auch die Problematik einer italienischen Stadtliteratur angesprochen. Mailand ist diejenige Stadt Italiens, die sich zu einer Metropole von annahernd europaischen Dimensionen entwickelt: der italienischen Literatur des Ottocento hingegen wurde in der Forschung bislang jegliche Urbanitat abgesprochen. Im Zentrum der Studie steht die besondere, auch unter komparatistischer Fragestellung herausgearbeitete Entwicklung der italienischen Stadtliteratur im 19. Jahrhundert, an der die Rezeption der franzosischen Literatur, insbesondere des Naturalismus, wesentlichen Anteil hatte. Unter Einbeziehung der literaturkritischen Diskussion um das Phanomen 'Stadt' werden dabei auch Gestaltungsverfahren der italienischen Literatur, die auf eine beginnende Moderne weisen, sichtbar gemacht. Nach einem Uberblick uber die Stadtdarstellung von Alessandro Manzoni bis zur Scapigliatura stellt die Untersuchung Romane und Erzahlungen aus dem letzten Viertel des Ottocento von Giovanni Verga (1840-1922), Emilio De Marchi (1851-1901) und Paolo Valera (1850-1926) in den Mittelpunkt. Die Texte bieten ein vielfaltiges und differenziertes Bild der urbanen Realitat, das von kritischer Distanznahme bis hin zum Aufspuren des poetologischen und innovativen Potentials von Grostadt reicht. Die Autoren haben jeder auf individuelle Weise Anteil am lombardischen Verismus, der in der Forschung allzu lange unbeachtet geblieben ist und der nun erstmals unter urbaner Fragestellung behandelt wird. Spatestens seit Michael Bachtins Lekture stellt Francois Rabelais (1494-1553) eine zentrale Referenz fur die literarturwissenschaftliche Theoriebildung dar. Der Verfasser der ab 1532 erscheinenden Pentalogie erscheint als Autor von faszinierender Modernitat, als Ahnherr von Intertextualitat, Selbstreferenz oder Dekonstruktion. Solcherart Etiketten haben allerdings nur den Methodenstreit befordert, so da zahllose Fragen, die Rabelais` Romanwerk stellt, von der Forschung unbeantwortet sind. Exemplarisch lat sich das am "e;Gargantua"e; zeigen. Schwierigkeiten bereiten dort u.a. die Abschlukapitel mit der Beschreibung einer imaginaren Architektur. Die Funktion der hier greifbaren mnemotechnischen Verfahren wird nicht ansatzweise erkannt. Die vorliegende Arbeit verfolgt daher das Ziel, den Blick weg von modernen Identifikationen zu lenken, um die historische Differenz eines zeitlich fernen wie habituell fremden Literaturkonzepts paradigmatisch sichtbar zu machen, dessen Funktion Literatur als Lebensfuhrung benennt. Sie beschreitet dazu ein von der Rabelais-Forschung weithin unbetretenes Gebiet: Der Text des 1534/5 publizierten Romans wird zum einen im mediengeschichtlichen und paradigmatischen Rahmen seiner Entstehungssituation gelesen. Mit dieser Kontextualisierung ist eine weitere methodische Option verbunden. Die Kategorien der Mundlichkeits-/Schriftlichkeitsforschung eroffnen die Moglichkeit, pragmatische, mediale und materiale Faktoren in die Analyse einzubeziehen, die einem eng gefaten Textbegriff entgehen. Fur den "e;Gargantua"e; heit dies, da hier erstmals die literarische Relevanz von Praktiken des Lesens und Schreibens sowie der ihnen komplementaren Techniken der kulturellen Ubermittlung ins Blickfeld geraten. Dies betrifft vor allem die unter dem Begriff der Semi-Oralitat gefaten, fur mediale Ubergangssituationen typischen Rezeptions- und Produktionsformen von Literatur. Nicht zuletzt wird ein altes Problem der Rabelais-Forschung gelost: Die Studie weist erstmals den hohen Stellenwert der ars memorativa in der literarischen Konzeption nach und liefert damit einen Schlussel fur den Bau der Abtei von Theleme.

Das Ende der Welt, Weite, Wind, riesenhafte Dimensionen und kuriose Gestalten dies sind verbreitete Topoi hinsichtlich der sudlichsten Region des amerikanischen Kontinents. Gleichzeitig haben Patagonien und Feuerland Reisende wie Schriftsteller seit der europaischen Entdeckung' durch Ferdinand Magellan fasziniert. Die Region ist Projektionsflache fur vielfaltige individuelle wie kollektive Wunsche, Fantasien und Utopien. Auf der Basis postkolonialer Literatur- und Kulturtheorien analysiert die Autorin zeitgenossische Erzahltexte aus Lateinamerika, Europa und den USA in Hinblick auf wiederkehrende Motive und Stereotype. Die Studie untersucht zudem zahlreiche intertextuelle Verflechtungen sowie die kontinuierlichen Verschiebungen zwischen Zentrum' und Peripherie'. Sichtbar wird, dass der patagonische Raum grundlegend durch die wechselseitigen, transkontinentalen Bewegungsformen zwischen Patagonien und den metropolitanen Zentren gekennzeichnet ist Kolonisierung, Migration, Flucht, Reisen und Tourismus sind konstitutive Elemente im untersuchten Textkorpus. Den wildromantischen Imaginationen der Abenteurer steht dabei die Erinnerung an die gewaltvolle Siedlungsgeschichte gegenuber. Das Buch wurde 2009 vom Deutschen Romanistenverbandmit dem Elise-Richter-Preis ausgezeichnet.

Das Interesse der Studie gilt der sogenannten "e;Aventure Ajar"e;, einem von Romain Gary (1914-1980) im Zeitraum von 1974-1980 inszenierten Pseudonymenspiel, dessen Aufdeckung im Jahre 1981 im franzosischen Literaturbetrieb fur groe Uberraschung sorgte: Emile Ajar, jener junge Autor, dessen mysteriose Identitat lange Zeit die Medien beschaftigt und in den man vielfach groe Hoffnungen gesetzt hatte, erwies sich als der literarische Einzelganger Romain Gary, der seit 1946 publizierte und abseits der markanten Stromungen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg einen eigenen, wenig beachteten Weg gegangen war. Die Tatsache, da den vier mit dem Autornamen Emile Ajar gezeichneten Texten, deren originelle Sprachverwendung bald als style Ajar von sich reden machte, groerer Erfolg und eine wesentlich bewutere Lekture zuteil wurde als gleichzeitig verfaten Romanen Garys, fordert zu einer spezifisch literaturwissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Pseudonymenspiel heraus. Neben den biographisch-motivationalen Aspekten der Inszenierung, die auch Garys Personlichkeitsideal des 'brennenden Ich' betreffen, steht das poetologische Verhaltnis der beiden Textserien zur Debatte. Da der ungewohnliche Fall auch Erkenntnismoglichkeiten im Bereich der allgemeinen Literaturtheorie bietet, beschaftigt sich Poier-Bernhard auch mit Themen wie der Konstitution literarischer Ironie, der Bedeutung des Autornamens, Pseudonymitat und Heteronymitat; zahlreiche andere, zum Vergleich herangezogene Texte der deutschen und der portugiesischen Literatur verleihen der Arbeit dabei eine komparatistische Weite. Einen theoretischen Schwerpunkt der Studie bildet Poier-Bernhards Beitrag zur Autobiographie-Diskussion, in dem der Versuch einer grundlegenden Begriffsklarung zum Zwecke einer prazisen Textsortenbestimmung unternommen wird.

Vor dem Hintergrund der Diskussion uber die krisenhafte Raumerfahrung der Fruhen Neuzeit untersucht die Autorin die Prasentation von Wahrnehmung und Perspektive in den Novellen von Cervantes (1547-1616). Der Vergleich mit Textbeispielen aus anderen spanischen Novellensammlungen des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts (Timoneda, Lope de Vega, Cespedes y Meneses, Maria de Zayas) enthullt dabei eindrucklich bislang vernachlassigte Charakteristika des cervantinischen Schreibens. Im Mittelpunkt stehen erstmals die raumliche Perspektivierung der Wahrnehmung und der konkrete Wahrnehmungsakt. Es gelingt der Autorin, die bis heute "e;geheimnisvolle Perspektivenwirkung"e; (Hatzfeld), die auch Autoren wie Flaubert bei der Lekture von Cervantes verbluffte, durchschaubar zu machen. Der Leser gewinnt einen vertieften Einblick in die teilweise neuartigen Erzahlverfahren von Cervantes. In seinem Werk finden sich so Ansatze zu fokalisiertem Erzahlen, in dem Krisensituationen und Orientierungskrisen der Figuren ihren Ausdruck finden. Offengelegt wird damit ein erkenntnistheoretisches Problem, das auf die Moderne verweist. Statt einer bloen Opposition von engano und desengano, von Illusion und Desillusionierung, die der Barockliteratur immer wieder nachgesagt wurde, zeigt die Verfasseirn bei Cervantes eine differenzierte Darstellung des Wahrnehmungsaktes als Proze auf. Die synchrone und diachrone Perspektivierung der Wahrnehmung fuhrt in den Novellen von Cervantes zu einem kontextualisierten und subjektbezogenen Wahrheits- und Erkenntniskonzept. Dieses befindet sich im Spannungsverhaltnis zur 'gesteuerten Kultur' (Maravall) der spanischen Barockgesellschaft. Die Untersuchung bietet vielseitige Anregungen und neue Einsichten fur eine Auseinandersetzung mit Cervantes, dem spanischen 'Goldenen Zeitalter' sowie der Novellistik und Erzahltheorie der Fruhen Neuzeit und Moderne.
