Beskrivelse af Andromaque, Britannicus and Athalie (1903)
Andromaque, Britannicus and Athalie is a collection of three plays written by French playwright Jean Racine in the 17th century. The plays are set in ancient Greece and Rome and explore themes of love, power, and betrayal. Andromaque tells the story of the widow Andromaque who is being forced to marry the Greek conqueror Pyrrhus. She is torn between her duty to her deceased husband and her love for Pyrrhus. Britannicus is set in ancient Rome and focuses on the struggle for power between the emperor Nero and his stepbrother Britannicus. The play explores themes of political intrigue, ambition, and betrayal. Athalie is based on the biblical story of Queen Athaliah who seeks to destroy the royal line of Judah. The play explores themes of power, religion, and the consequences of one's actions. Racine's plays are known for their poetic language and exploration of complex human emotions. Andromaque, Britannicus and Athalie are considered some of his greatest works and continue to be performed and studied today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
