Christiania, Norway 1720Brander Hansen lost his hearing at age seven and his inheritance at twenty-three. Furious at his father's betrayal, Brander bolts to Christiania and sets himself up as "a discreet gentleman of discovery." He solves crimes for money, mostly bad debts and stolen property, until he stumbles across a serial killer.While escorting the Baroness of a bankrupt estate to his estranged and unsupecting younger brother for an arranged marriage, Brander realizes he is following the serial killer's path across southern Norway.
