Beskrivelse af Tom King's Or The Paphian Grove, With The Humors Of Covent Garden, The Theatre, Gaming Table, Etc.
Tom Kings Or The Paphian Grove, With The Humors Of Covent Garden, The Theatre, Gaming Table, Etc.: A Mock Heroic Poem, In Three Cantos (1741) is a satirical poem written by James Barber. The poem follows the adventures of Tom King, a notorious womanizer and gambler, as he navigates the seedy underworld of Covent Garden in 18th century London. Through witty and humorous verse, Barber skewers the societal norms of the time, particularly the hypocrisy of the upper classes who engage in the same vices as Tom King but condemn him for it. The poem is divided into three cantos, each focusing on a different aspect of Tom King's life, from his exploits at the gaming table to his romantic escapades in the Paphian Grove (a euphemism for a brothel). Despite its bawdy subject matter, the poem is a work of art and showcases Barber's talent as a poet. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
