Beskrivelse af Theology in Context
In This Book:
Dave Johnson takes a thorough look at the culture of one of the Filipino people groups with a view toward developing a contextual theology that is biblically accurate, missiologically sound and culturally relevant throughout the Filipino lowlands. He delves deep, seeking to understand the religious worldview assumptions that underpin and drive the various religious practices and the people who are involved in them. Some of the specific issues he tackles are:
- All Saints' Day and the dead returning to their gravesites
- Praying to Mary and the Saints
- Demon possession
- Town Fiestas
- Sickness and healing
- How people have been transformed by the power of God within their own cultural setting, both in the past and present
- And much more!
From the Foreword
Theology in Context: A Case Study in the Philippines . . is a serious reflection on some of the formal and animistic practices of Catholicism that have resulted in Folk Catholicism. His purpose, after many years of research and reflection, is to offer a biblical response to these practices as well as to the worldview that underpins them. Read, be inspired, and come to a deeper understanding of how the Word of God can and must impact Filipino culture.
Dr. J. Russell Turney
Asia Pacific Regional Director
Assemblies of God World Mission
Dave Johnson has done the church and the mission community a great service by providing a study that engages the animistic world view of the Philippines and the impact the gospel has in bringing change. This is true grassroots research which has implications for communicating the gospel and contextualizing God's Word into the practical issues of life. Practical implications of this study to the pastor or mission worker are important. I commend Dr. Johnson for his delving into addressing the animistic world of the Filipinos and showing Christ's power to deliver from deception
