Beskrivelse af The Whirlpool
The Whirlpool is a novel by George Gissing, originally published in 1897. Set in London during the late Victorian era, the story follows the lives of two sisters, Alma and Eveline Royston, who come from a wealthy family but are struggling to find their place in society.Alma is a strong-willed and independent woman who is determined to make her own way in the world, while Eveline is more timid and submissive, relying on her sister for guidance. The two sisters become involved with a group of bohemian artists and writers, including the charismatic and manipulative Gabriel Nash.As they navigate the complexities of their relationships with Nash and other members of the group, Alma and Eveline must also confront their own desires and ambitions, as well as the expectations of their family and society at large. The novel explores themes of love, betrayal, social class, and the struggle for self-expression and fulfillment. The Whirlpool is considered one of Gissing's most complex and psychologically nuanced works, and is often cited as a precursor to modernist literature. It remains a compelling portrait of the social and cultural tensions of the late Victorian era, and a powerful meditation on the human condition. After a stare and a frown, Harvey woke the echoes with boisterous laughter. It was long since any passage in writing had so irresistibly tickled his sense of humour. Well, he must let Abbott know of this. It might be as well, perhaps, if he called on Mrs Abbott tomorrow, to remove any doubt that might remain in her mind. The fellow Wager being an old acquaintance of his, he could not get rid of a sense of far-off responsibility in this matter; though, happily, Wager's meeting with Mrs Abbott's cousin, which led to marriage and misery, came about quite independently of him. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
