Beskrivelse af The Way Of The World
The Way of the World is a play written by William Congreve, first performed in 1700. It is a comedy of manners, set in London in the late 17th century, and explores the themes of love, money, and social status. The play follows the story of Mirabell, a young man who is in love with Millamant, a wealthy and independent woman. However, Millamant's aunt, Lady Wishfort, is determined to marry her off to a wealthy suitor of her choice. Mirabell must navigate a complex web of social etiquette and deceit in order to win Millamant's hand in marriage. Along the way, he enlists the help of his friend, Fainall, who is secretly plotting against his own wife, and the witty servant, Waitwell, who is involved in a scheme to deceive Lady Wishfort. The play is known for its clever dialogue, intricate plot, and sharp satire of upper-class society. It is considered one of the greatest works of Restoration comedy and has influenced many later writers and playwrights.LADY. With Mirabell? You call my blood into my face with mentioning that traitor. She durst not have the confidence. I sent her to negotiate an affair, in which if I'm detected I'm undone. If that wheedling villain has wrought upon Foible to detect me, I'm ruined. O my dear friend, I'm a wretch of wretches if I'm detected. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
