Beskrivelse af The Vicar of Wakefield
The Vicar of Wakefield is a novel written by Oliver Goldsmith that was first published in 1766. The story follows the life of a vicar named Dr. Charles Primrose and his family, who live in the town of Wakefield in England. Dr. Primrose is a kind and generous man who is loved by his community, but his family faces many challenges and hardships throughout the course of the novel. The novel begins with the happy family living a comfortable life, but their fortunes take a turn for the worse when their landlord cheats them out of their money and they are forced to move to a smaller house. The family also faces personal tragedies, such as the elopement of their daughter and the imprisonment of their son. Despite these setbacks, Dr. Primrose remains optimistic and continues to believe in the goodness of people. The novel is a satirical commentary on the social and political climate of 18th-century England, and it explores themes such as morality, religion, and the importance of family. It is also a romantic comedy, with several love stories woven throughout the narrative. The Vicar of Wakefield is considered a classic of English literature and has been praised for its wit, humor, and insightful commentary on human nature. It has been adapted into several stage plays and films, and it remains a popular and beloved novel to this day.1908. Anglo-Irish author who achieved some success as a miscellaneous contributor to periodicals and as the author of Enquiry into the Present State of Polite Learning in Europe. But it was not until The Citizen of the World, a series of whimsical and satirical essays, that he was recognized as an able man of letters. His fame grew with The Traveler, a philosophic poem, and the nostalgic pastoral The Deserted Village. The Vicar of Wakefield is Goldsmiths most enduring novel. It is a portrait of village life, narrated by Dr. Primrose, the title character, whose family endures many trials-including the loss of most of their money, the seduction of one daughter, the destruction of their home by fire, and the vicar's incarceration.
