Mary becomes obsessed with the mantle and begins to believe that it can help her win Edward's love. However, as she becomes more and more consumed by her desire for the mantle, she begins to lose touch with reality and her relationships with those around her suffer. As the story unfolds, Mary's obsession with the mantle leads her down a dangerous path, and she must ultimately confront the consequences of her actions.
