Beskrivelse af The Scarlet Woman
The Scarlet Woman is a novel written by Joseph Hocking and published in 1899. The story is set in a small Cornish village and revolves around the character of Mary Trehearne, a young woman who is known to the villagers as the ""scarlet woman"". Mary is the daughter of a wealthy landowner who has disowned her for her scandalous behavior. Despite her reputation, Mary is a kind-hearted and selfless person who has been unfairly judged by her community. The novel follows Mary's journey as she tries to redeem herself and find love and acceptance. She meets and falls in love with a young doctor named John Penwyn, but their relationship is threatened by the disapproval of John's mother and the gossip of the villagers. Mary also has to deal with the advances of a wealthy and influential man who wants to marry her for her money. As the story unfolds, the reader is taken on a journey through the complex social dynamics of a small village in the late 19th century. The novel explores themes of love, redemption, forgiveness, and the power of gossip and social stigma. The Scarlet Woman is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that offers a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people in a bygone era. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
