Beskrivelse af The Redemption Of Freetown (1898)
The Redemption of Freetown is a historical novel written by Charles Monroe Sheldon and originally published in 1898. The story takes place in Freetown, Sierra Leone, a British colony in West Africa, during the late 18th century. The novel follows the lives of several characters, including a British naval officer, a missionary, and a group of former slaves who have settled in Freetown. The plot revolves around the struggle for freedom and equality in Freetown, as the former slaves face discrimination and oppression from both the British colonizers and the native tribes. The British naval officer, Captain George Hardy, is sent to Freetown to help maintain order and protect British interests. He becomes involved in the lives of the characters and witnesses firsthand the injustices they face. The missionary, Reverend John Endicott, is dedicated to educating and uplifting the former slaves, but he also faces challenges from the British authorities who view him as a threat to their power. The former slaves, led by a charismatic leader named Tom, are determined to fight for their rights and their freedom, even if it means risking their lives. The novel explores themes of colonialism, racism, and social justice, as well as the power of faith and community in overcoming adversity. It is a gripping and inspiring tale of courage and resilience in the face of oppression, and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice in our world. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
