Beskrivelse af The Monikins
The Monikins is a satirical novel written by James Fenimore Cooper in 1835. The story takes place on a fictional island called ""Leaphigh"" where the inhabitants are intelligent monkeys called ""Monikins"". The Monikins are divided into two groups, the aristocratic ""High Monikins"" and the common ""Low Monikins"". The novel follows the adventures of two human characters, Sir John Goldencalf and Captain Noah Poke, who are shipwrecked on the island and must navigate the complex social hierarchy of the Monikins. Cooper uses the Monikins as a metaphor for human society, critiquing the class system and political corruption of his time. The novel is filled with witty satire and social commentary, making it a unique and entertaining read. Throughout the story, the characters encounter various challenges and obstacles, including a trial, a war, and a revolution, all while trying to find a way off the island. Overall, The Monikins is an insightful and humorous commentary on human society, told through the lens of a fantastical world filled with intelligent monkeys. It is a must-read for fans of satire and social commentary, as well as anyone interested in the works of James Fenimore Cooper. My ancestor in the male line hesitated to reply, for, hitherto, his ideas had been confined to the profits; never having dared to lift his thoughts as high as that source from which he could not but see they flowed in a very ample stream; but thrown upon himself by so unexpected a question, and being quick at figures, after adding ten per cent. to the sum which he knew the last year had given as the net avail of their joint ingenuity, he named the amount, in answered to the interrogatory. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
