Beskrivelse af The Learned Women
The Learned Women is a comedic play written by French playwright Jean Baptiste Poquelin, better known as Moliere. The play centers around the character of Chrysale, a man who is trying to maintain control over his household despite the interference of his strong-willed wife, Philaminte, and her equally headstrong sister, Armande. The two women are part of a group of learned women who have devoted themselves to the pursuit of knowledge and intellectualism. They are determined to marry off Philaminte's daughter, Henriette, to a man who shares their love of learning, but Chrysale is opposed to the idea and wants Henriette to marry for love instead. The play is a satire of the intellectualism and feminism of its time, with Moliere poking fun at the pretensions and absurdities of the learned women and their male counterparts. The characters are all exaggerated and caricatured, making for a lively and entertaining read. Overall, The Learned Women is a witty and humorous play that offers a glimpse into the social and cultural attitudes of 17th century France.HEN. The safest thing to do would be to gain my mother over. My father easily consents to everything, but he places little weight on what he himself resolves. He has received from Heaven a certain gentleness which makes him readily submit to the will of his wife. It is she who governs, and who in a dictatorial tone lays down the law whenever she has made up her mind to anything. I wish I could see in you a more pliant spirit towards her and towards my aunt. If you would but fall in with their views, you would secure their favour and their esteem. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
