The Golden Grasshopper by William Henry Giles Kingston is a historical fiction novel set in the 16th century during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The story follows the life of a young boy named Roger who is orphaned at a young age and sent to live with his uncle in London. His uncle is a goldsmith and Roger learns the trade from him. Roger becomes fascinated with the stories of Sir Thomas Gresham, a wealthy merchant and financier who is responsible for building the Royal Exchange in London.As Roger grows older, he becomes determined to meet Sir Thomas Gresham and work for him. He eventually gets his chance and becomes a trusted employee of Gresham's. Roger witnesses many of the important events of the time, including the arrival of the Spanish Armada and the death of Queen Elizabeth I. Throughout the story, Roger learns important lessons about hard work, loyalty, and the value of education.The novel is notable for its historical accuracy and attention to detail.
