The God Of Vengeance

- Drama In Three Acts (1918)

Bag om The God Of Vengeance

""The God of Vengeance"" is a three-act play written by Sholem Asch in 1918. The story takes place in a Jewish brothel in early 20th century Poland and revolves around the relationship between the brothel owner, Yekel, and his daughter, Rifkele. Yekel hopes to marry Rifkele off to a respectable man, but Rifkele falls in love with one of the prostitutes, Manke. As their relationship develops, Yekel's business and reputation are put at risk, leading him to take drastic measures to protect his family's honor. The play explores themes of love, morality, and the clash between traditional Jewish values and modernity. It was controversial at the time of its publication due to its frank portrayal of sexuality and the depiction of Jewish characters in a less than flattering light. Despite this, it has become a classic of Yiddish literature and has been adapted into various forms, including an English-language production that premiered on Broadway in 1923.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
