Beskrivelse af The Eve Of St. Agnes (1856)
The Eve of St. Agnes is a narrative poem written by John Keats in 1819 and published in 1820. The poem is set in medieval times and tells the story of a young woman named Madeline who believes that if she performs certain rituals on the eve of St. Agnes, she will see her future husband in a dream. She sneaks away from her family's party to perform the rituals and is visited by Porphyro, a young man who is in love with her but is from a rival family. Porphyro convinces Madeline to elope with him, but they are caught by her family's guards. However, they are able to escape and spend the night together. The poem is known for its lush and sensual descriptions of the setting and characters, as well as its exploration of themes such as love, desire, and fate. Keats uses rich imagery and language to create a dreamlike atmosphere, and the poem has been praised for its musicality and its use of literary devices such as alliteration and enjambment. The Eve of St. Agnes is considered one of Keats' most popular and enduring works, and it has been adapted into various forms, including operas, plays, and films. It is often studied in literature classes and is considered a masterpiece of Romantic poetry. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
