Beskrivelse af The Eternal City (1901)
The Eternal City is a novel written by Hall Caine and published in 1901. The story is set in Rome and follows the life of a young Englishman named Richard Garth, who travels to the city to study art. Richard falls in love with an Italian woman named Donna Roma, who is a famous singer and actress. However, their love is complicated by the fact that Roma is already engaged to a wealthy Italian nobleman named Prince Tor di Rocca. As Richard becomes more involved in Roma's life, he becomes embroiled in the political turmoil of the time, as the Italian people are fighting for their independence from foreign powers. Richard becomes a supporter of the Italian cause and begins to work with a group of revolutionaries who are plotting to overthrow the ruling monarchy. As the revolution draws closer, Richard's relationship with Roma becomes increasingly strained, and he must decide whether to stay and fight for the cause he believes in or to leave Rome and start a new life elsewhere. The novel explores themes of love, loyalty, and political upheaval, and provides a vivid portrait of life in Rome during a tumultuous period in Italian history. Overall, The Eternal City is a gripping and emotional novel that offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of 19th-century Rome. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
