Beskrivelse af The Egoist
The Egoist is a novel written by George Meredith, first published in 1879. The story centers around Sir Willoughby Patterne, a wealthy and egotistical bachelor, and his attempts to find a suitable wife. Despite his many qualities and accomplishments, Sir Willoughby's arrogance and self-absorption make him a difficult prospect for any potential bride. The novel follows his courtship of three women: Laetitia Dale, a gentle and kind-hearted woman who is initially enamored with Sir Willoughby but eventually sees through his faade; Clara Middleton, a spirited and independent woman who is repulsed by Sir Willoughby's conceit; and Vernon Whitford, a male friend of Sir Willoughby's who tries to intervene and save him from his own ego. Along the way, the novel explores themes of love, marriage, gender roles, and the dangers of excessive self-regard. With its sharp wit, complex characters, and insightful social commentary, The Egoist is considered one of Meredith's greatest works and a classic of Victorian literature. These little scoundrel imps, who have attained to some respectability as the dogs and pets of the Comic Spirit, had been curiously attentive three years earlier, long before the public announcement of his engagement to the beautiful Miss Durham, on the day of Sir Willoughby's majority, when Mrs. Mountstuart Jenkinson said her word of him. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
