Beskrivelse af Stickeen
Stickeen is a classic adventure and nature book written by John Muir, one of America's most famous naturalists and conservationists. The book is based on Muir's personal experience of exploring the Alaskan wilderness with a small dog named Stickeen. The story begins with Muir's arrival in Alaska and his journey to explore the glaciers of the region. He is accompanied by a group of men and their dogs, including Stickeen, who initially seems like an unremarkable and unimpressive companion. However, as they venture deeper into the wilderness, Muir and Stickeen develop a deep bond and mutual respect for each other. The book is a thrilling account of their adventures as they navigate treacherous ice fields, cross raging rivers, and face the dangers of the wild. Muir's vivid descriptions of the stunning landscapes, the harsh weather conditions, and the wildlife they encounter bring the Alaskan wilderness to life. Stickeen is not just a tale of adventure, but also a story of friendship, trust, and the power of nature to transform us. Muir's love and respect for the natural world shine through in every page, making this book a must-read for anyone interested in nature, adventure, and the human-animal bond.1909. Scottish-born American naturalist and writer who devoted much of his life to saving the natural beauties of the West from destruction by commercial exploitation. Stickeen begins: In the summer of 1880 I set out from Fort Wrangel in a canoe to continue the exploration of the icy region of southeastern Alaska, begun in the fall of 1879. After the necessary provisions, blankets, etc., had been collected and stowed away, and my Indian crew were in their places ready to start, while a crowd of their relatives and friends on the wharf were bidding them good-by and good-luck, my companion, the Rev. S.H. Young, for whom we were waiting, at last came aboard, followed by a little black dog, that immediately made himself at home by curling up in a hollow among the baggage. I like dogs, but this one seemed so small and worthless that I objected to his going, and asked the missionary why he was taking him.
