Beskrivelse af Sophonisba
Sophonisba: A Tragedy; Philaster; Virginia; Gustavus Vasa; Ulysses (1778) by James Thomson is a collection of five plays written by the Scottish poet and playwright. The first play, Sophonisba, is a tragedy that tells the story of the Carthaginian queen who takes her own life rather than submit to the Romans. The second play, Philaster, is a romantic tragicomedy set in ancient Greece about a prince who falls in love with a woman who is already betrothed to another. The third play, Virginia, is a tragedy based on the story of the Roman girl who was killed by her father to protect her from a corrupt judge. The fourth play, Gustavus Vasa, is a historical drama about the Swedish king who led a rebellion against the Danish rule in the 16th century. The final play, Ulysses, is a classical drama based on the adventures of the Greek hero Ulysses as he returns home after the Trojan War. Overall, this collection of plays showcases Thomson's versatility as a writer and his ability to tackle a variety of genres and themes.Additional Authors: Mr. Crisp, Henry Brooke, N. Rowe. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
