I started training puppies years ago, when I saw my best friend's brother give trouble to my friend's thirteen-pound, Jack Russell terrier, named TIMMS. I told myself that I never wanted to give this beautiful terrier a reason to fear me, to doubt me, or to question my motives in any way. I would never hit her, yell at her, make startling noises to get her attention, take food from her, or lock her away in dark, secluded rooms. I wanted to earn her love and trust, while I gave her mine. Just before the winter holidays a year later, my friend passed on from an accident. His family moved and took TIMMS with them. I did not see them for almost another year. When I walked into their house, TIMMS wailed loudly at me, made a mess on the floor and begged me to pick her up. That was a magnificent reward to me for having loved TIMMS so easily. Some breeds need more assertiveness than other breeds, but I was never aggressive with TIMMS.
