Beskrivelse af Racine's Andromaque (1899)
Racine's Andromaque is a play written by the French playwright Jean Racine and first performed in 1667. The play is set in the aftermath of the Trojan War and follows the story of Andromaque, the widow of Hector, as she is held captive by Pyrrhus, the son of Achilles. Pyrrhus is in love with Andromaque and wants her to marry him, but she is still mourning her husband and refuses his advances. Meanwhile, Pyrrhus is being pressured by his advisors to marry Hermione, the daughter of Menelaus and Helen of Troy, in order to secure an alliance with Sparta. As the plot unfolds, tensions rise and the characters are forced to confront their conflicting desires and loyalties.Racine's Andromaque is considered a masterpiece of French literature and a prime example of classical tragedy. The play explores themes of love, duty, power, and revenge, and is known for its complex characters and poetic language. This edition of the play, published in 1899, features the original French text alongside an English translation by A.W. Verity. It includes an introduction and notes by the translator, as well as a critical essay on the play's themes and structure. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in French literature or classical drama. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
