The mutilation of an already dead body as a form of punishment is known as post-execution punishment. The extensive application of the death penalty and post-execution punishments along with the fact that vast numbers of criminals were hanged on the gallows have long been described by historians as a crucial component of social interactions throughout the eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries. This was the pinnacle of a terror-based criminal justice system. After late eighteenth century, the potential of expanding the usage of post-execution punishments and notably public dissection was still being advocated widely. However, in the late eighteenth century, critics of the death penalty have emphasized on the requirement of substituting it with non-capital alternatives such as transportation, solitary confinement, or life imprisonment with hard labor.
