La trama ruota attorno a una storia di rivalità, vendetta e amore, che ha come protagonisti Oberto, figlio del Conte di San Bonifacio, e la vedova Cuniza. La musica di Verdi è intensa e drammatica, anticipando lo stile che lo porterà al successo internazionale.
