Beskrivelse af Nightmare Abbey
Nightmare Abbey is a satirical novel written by Thomas Love Peacock in 1818. The story is set in an old, decaying Gothic mansion called Nightmare Abbey, which is located in a remote part of England. The protagonist of the story is a young man named Scythrop who is a romantic poet and lives in the mansion with his father, a philosopher named Mr. Glowry. The novel is a parody of the Gothic genre, and Peacock uses it to satirize the Romantic movement of the early 19th century. The characters in the novel are all caricatures of the Romantic poets and philosophers of the time, and Peacock pokes fun at their exaggerated emotions and their belief in the supernatural. The plot of the novel revolves around Scythrop's love for a young woman named Marionetta, who is engaged to his friend, Mr. Listless. Scythrop's unrequited love for Marionetta leads him to become increasingly disillusioned with the world and to question the meaning of life. The novel is written in a witty and satirical style, and Peacock uses a variety of literary devices, such as irony and parody, to mock the Romantic movement. The novel is also notable for its use of wordplay and puns, which add to its humor and satirical tone.Overall, Nightmare Abbey is a clever and entertaining satire of the Romantic movement, and it remains a popular and influential work of English literature. But when Marionetta hinted that she was to leave the Abbey immediately, Scythrop snatched from its repository his ancestor's skull, filled it with Madeira, and presenting himself before Mr Glowry, threatened to drink off the contents if Mr Glowry did not immediately promise that Marionetta should not be taken from the Abbey without her own consent. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
