Beskrivelse af New England Judged By the Spirit of the Lord
""New England Judged By the Spirit of the Lord"" is a historical book written by George Bishop, which provides an account of the Quaker persecution in New England during the 17th century. The book documents the harsh treatment of Quakers by the Puritan authorities in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Haven colonies, who considered Quakerism a threat to their religious and political authority. The author uses primary sources, including court records, letters, and personal accounts, to show the extent of the persecution, which included fines, imprisonment, banishment, and even death. Bishop also argues that Quakers were not the only group persecuted in New England, as other religious minorities, such as Baptists and Catholics, also faced discrimination. The book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of religious freedom and tolerance in America.1703. The present book is offered in two parts. Part first contains a brief relation of the sufferings of the people called Quakers in New England from the time of their first arrival there in the year 1656 to the year 1660, wherein their merciless whippings, chainings, finings, imprisonings, starvings, burnings in the hand, cutting off of the ears, and putting to death, with divers other cruelties, inflicted upon the bodies of innocent men and women only for conscience sake, are briefly described. In answer to the declaration of their persecutors apologizing for the same, 1659. Second part, being a further relation of the cruel and bloody sufferings of the people called Quakers in New England continued from the year 1660 to 1665. Beginning with the sufferings of William Leddra, whom they put to death. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
