Metabolic syndrome is the combination of three or more medical conditions, including high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high serum triglycerides, central obesity and low serum high-density lipoprotein. This condition increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Nearly 20-25% of the world's adult population is afflicted by metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is an active area of medical research. The underlying cause is believed to be a disorder of energy storage and utilization. The commonly associated risk factors of metabolic disorders include sedentary behavior, genetics, diet, aging, etc. Recent research points to the contribution of prolonged chronic stress to metabolic syndrome.
