The story follows the lives of two families, the Stonemans and the Camerons, who are divided by their loyalties to the Union and the Confederacy. The novel focuses on the First Battle of Manassas, also known as the Battle of Bull Run, which took place on July 21, 1861. The book explores the human cost of war as well as the political and social issues that led to the conflict. The characters are richly drawn and the narrative is both gripping and insightful. Sinclair's writing style is vivid and evocative, transporting readers back to a tumultuous time in American history. Manassas, the first part, features a young Southern man, Allan Montague, who joins the Union army and is involved in the Battle at Manassas. Sinclair did not continue with the other parts.
