However, Pinkerton leaves Japan soon after the wedding, promising to return, but Butterfly is left alone and pregnant. She waits faithfully for Pinkerton's return, even after three years, but when he finally does come back, he brings with him his American wife. Butterfly is heartbroken and decides to take her own life, leaving behind her young son.
