Beskrivelse af John Bull's Other Island
John Bull's Other Island is a play written by the famous Irish playwright, George Bernard Shaw, and was first performed in 1904. The play is a political satire that explores the relationship between Ireland and England during the early 20th century, when Ireland was still under British rule. The story follows the character of Tom Broadbent, an English businessman who travels to Ireland to oversee the construction of a new railway. While there, he meets his Irish cousin, Larry Doyle, who introduces him to the local culture and politics. Tom soon finds himself caught up in the tensions between the English and Irish, as well as the conflict between modernity and tradition. Through the character of Larry, Shaw presents a critique of Irish nationalism and its tendency towards romanticism and idealism. He also explores the idea of cultural identity and the role of language in shaping it. The preface for politicians, which was added to the play in 1916, is a commentary on the political situation in Ireland at the time. Shaw discusses the failure of British policy towards Ireland and the need for a new approach that takes into account the country's unique history and culture. Overall, John Bull's Other Island is a witty and thought-provoking play that offers a nuanced perspective on the complex relationship between Ireland and England. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
