Beskrivelse af Incognita
Incognita is a play written by William Congreve in 1692. The play is set in Madrid and revolves around the love story of two young couples. The first couple is Don Carlos and Isabella, who are secretly married but are separated due to the disapproval of Isabella's father, Don Vincentio. The second couple is Don Antonio and Donna Lucretia, who are in love but are forced to keep their relationship a secret due to the disapproval of Don Antonio's father, Don Lopez. The plot thickens when Don Antonio disguises himself as a woman, calling himself Incognita, in order to secretly meet with Donna Lucretia. Don Carlos, who is unaware of the true identity of Incognita, falls in love with her and becomes jealous of Don Antonio's relationship with her. Meanwhile, Isabella is also disguised as a man in order to find her husband and reunite with him.The play is full of mistaken identities, secret meetings, and comedic situations. It explores themes of love, deception, and the societal norms of the time. The characters are well-developed and the dialogue is witty and engaging. Incognita is considered one of Congreve's best works and is still performed today. Here Aurelian contracted an acquaintance with Persons of Worth of several Countries, but among the rest an intimacy with a Gentleman of Quality of Spain, and Nephew to the Archbishop of Toledo, who had so wrought himself into the Affections of Aurelian, through a Conformity of Temper, an Equality in Years, and something of resemblance in Feature and Proportion, that he look'd upon him as his second self. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
