Beskrivelse af I Promessi Sposi, The Betrothed
I Promessi Sposi, also known as The Betrothed, is a historical novel written by Italian author Alessandro Manzoni. The novel is set in 17th-century Italy and follows the story of two young lovers, Renzo and Lucia, who are prevented from marrying by the local lord, Don Rodrigo. The couple faces numerous challenges and obstacles as they try to reunite and start a life together, including the outbreak of the plague and the invasion of foreign troops.Throughout the novel, Manzoni explores themes such as love, faith, justice, and morality. He also provides a vivid depiction of Italian society during the time period, including the power struggles between the ruling class and the common people. The Betrothed is considered a masterpiece of Italian literature and has been translated into numerous languages. This particular edition, V21 of the Harvard Classics, features an introduction by Charles W. Eliot and includes a biographical sketch of Manzoni.1909. This is in form an historical novel. It is rather psychological and sentimental. The scene is laid in Lombardy between 1628-1631, and the plot deals with the thwarting of the love of two peasants by a local tyrant. The manners of the time are presented with great vividness and picturesqueness.
