Did you know that 75% of falls experienced by older people occur in their home. All too often a fall can result in injuries that range from mild to serious, causing broken bones, head contusions and emergency room visits. If the older person has a history of falls, the risk is even greater. Fortunately, many falls occurring in the home are preventable. Home: Safe Haven or Fall Hazard? It covers potential safety threats in the bathroom bedroom, and kitchen and mobility challenges due to faulty lighting, stairs and flooring, including the terrain outside the home. The book offers guidance for older people, their adult children and/or health caregivers to help them spot potential fall hazards in the home and the steps needed to correct or modify them. Each chapter includes a description of the hazards, their solutions and why certain modifications are recommended for older people with varying levels of physical abilities. Photos accompany many of the modifications to further assist the reader. Home: Safe Haven or Fall Hazard? Environmental Modifications to Avoid Falling is designed to make readers aware of hazardous conditions and their possible solutions. My hope is that readers will gain an appreciation of the potential fall dangers lurking in the homes of many older people and take action and/or explore appropriate solutions in greater detail.
