The collapse of Socialism has had a profound effect on the society and politics in the countries that emerged after the break up of the Soviet Union. These countries had to learn everything from scratch. The collapse of socialism started teaching the new breed of politicians not only the fundamentals of real democracy but also the negative factors associated with democracy found in a typical developing country. The effects of the collapse of socialism in the Soviet Union touched all sections of society, especially Russian women. Education and other social services lost their importance in an economy that was now in shambles. Although a number of Western scholars have written volumes on the collapse of socialism in the Soviet Union this book is the first attempt by an Indian scholar (Vasundhara Mohan, Associate Professor, Centre for Central Eurasian Studies, University of Mumbai, India) to look at the effects with specific reference to the Democratisation of Soviet Polity, the status of women and the impact on the other social aspects of Russian Society. This book is an attempt to understand changes in the macro policy environment of organisations dealing with agriculture and agribusiness activities in South Asia. The main proposition of this study is that on account of limited opportunities for global agricultural trade in the pre-WTO period, and the 'autarkic' agricultural policy followed by most countries in South Asia. The main emphasis of 'development plans' was on self-sufficiency in agriculture, national food security and adequate availability of food through the Public Distribution System. Strengthening the export competitiveness of agriculture in the regional or global market was not a conscious strategy. However, this paradigm of national protection and self-sufficiency has been completely reversed by the provisions of the WTO, which has opened new opportunities for trade liberalisation. South Asia has to respond to the challenges of the WTO, and in this process, latent business opportunities within the region will come to the fore. This study suggests that agribusiness organisations in the region must anticipate these changes and prepare themselves for the coming years. It points out that while state supported agribusiness organisations will be adversely affected on account of the liberalisation manifesto which most South Asian nations have adopted, other forms of agribusiness organisations, especially co-operatives and private enterprises will get the opportunity to flourish. Statistics, M.A (Economics), B.A. (Honours), is currently a Senior Research Economist for the Centre for the Study of Human Development, Leeds, England (UK). He has taught Economics at different levels for many years before joining the Department of Economics, School of Business Studies, The University of Leeds, England as a Doctoral Researcher. He was awarded his second PhD from the University of Leeds, England. He has published research papers extensively in refereed international journals of repute and has authored singly or jointly more than 12 research books. His recent research book Poverty As Human Contestability Failure was published in the year 2007.
