178,95 kr. Squad 7 is an elite anti-terrorism team comprising FBI agents and Chicago cops. Mike Buck, a veteran FBI Special Agent is the driving force of the Squad 7 team. He's calm and efficient, but his past weighs heavily on him-wartime guilt, a failed marriage, and his partner's recent on-duty death. As the new millennium begins, Buck's investigation of the death of an old Vietnamese immigrant, a simple, seemingly innocent man, unravels a twenty-five-year-old mystery with international political implications. The local Vietnamese community is closed to outsiders, but an opening is created when a Vietnamese American detective and former "boat person", Do Tron, from the Chicago Police Department, is added to the Squad. Together they battle local gangs, corrupt politicians, and even other elements of the FBI. Buck creates more tension by becoming romantically involved with the daughter of one of the Vietnamese leaders in Chicago. As Buck delves deeper into the case, he realizes he's up against something greater than he anticipated. He navigates a complex web of corruption, political intrigue, and violence across continents. Along the way, he uncovers the truth about his past and his role in the Vietnam War. The clock is ticking, and the stakes are high as Buck and Tron race to stop a dangerous plot threatening global security. But as the investigation intensifies, Buck's personal and professional lives collide, putting everything he's worked for at risk. Set against the backdrop of the waning days of the pre-911 world, "Dead Wong" is a gripping thriller that explores the intersection of crime, politics, and personal demons. Inspired by true events, filled with vivid characters, a fast-paced plot, and a stunning twist, this novel is a must-read for fans of suspense and action.

- Why People Derail Jazz for Non-musical Reasons
153,95 kr. For over a hundred years, jazz embodied non-musical agendas. But recently, the social importance assigned to a jazz definition has been all encompassing. While postmodernists gaslight revision and skewer the market place, others like Tom Smith bemoan dilution of art for art's sake and derailment of newer forms. Like Smith's previous works, 'Critical Jazz Theory' examines this and related topics with a headstrong approach. *** Tom Smith is a trombonist, conductor, Senior Fulbright Professor, Down Beat Jazz Education Hall of Fame inductee, and unrepentant skeptic. He is author of the 'Stealth Jazz' Trilogy books that include 'Stealth Jazz: Behind the Curtain, ' 'Stealth Jazz Part II: Educational Dystopia, ' and 'The Stealth Jazz Abbreviated Guide to Media.

173,95 kr. In contemporary times, jazz appreciation boils down to a conflict between informed music lovers (dubbed snobs) and 'reachers, ' who deconstruct music while feigning altruism. This third and final book in the 'Stealth Jazz' trilogy is neither history or critique (per se), but a celebration of the open mindedness that once made jazz popular. Like its predecessors, 'The Stealth Jazz Abbreviated Guide to Media' is written in the non-repentant style that labeled its author "The Hunter S. Thompson of Jazz Criticism." Drawing on more than four decades as a world class musician/ educator/ historian, Smith lures readers into accepting his snobbery, while deriding those purposefully ignorant. *** Tom Smith's snobbery is unparalleled. The 'Down Beat' Hall of Fame inductee didn't buy a non-jazz or classical album until he was twenty-four, and rescinded his first car purchase when the dealer mocked Coltrane. Since then, his views have marginally softened, but are still pretty rough.

163,95 kr. This book is an autoethnography, the personal experience of a combat veteran who comes home a changed person. As the symptoms of PTSD grow stronger he is forced to first face, then learn to live with the disorder. Here is what the reviewers have to say: "Smith's open account of his long struggle serves as a guide and offers support to veterans and their families." ---Arthur Westing, Capt. USMC, Korea "I thought I knew PTSD. I've never been so wrong. It's real, awful and lasting. I apologize to my brothers and sisters in arms." ---Greg Johnson, Sgt. US Army, Vietnam "This is a real perspective on PTSD and what it does, what a suffer looks like, which is anyone. To better identify with us, 'Facing PTSD" should be on every medical professional's desk." ---Chris Griffin, Sgt. USMC, Iraq "If you have a yellow ribbon on the back of your car, you should have this book on a shelf in your house." ---Kathy Smith, wife of a combat veterans

- Educational Dystopia
153,95 kr. According to 'DownBeat' Hall of Fame inductee Tom Smith, education almost single-handedly rescued jazz, then neutered it for reasons having little to do with music. In his opinion, twenty-first century jazz is a misguided art form lacking the willingness to innovate, while some educators favor appeasement through membership in academic tribes, that stifle creativity, amid environments equally divided between 'hucksterism' and sincerity. All the while, university tuitions rise, high school programs lose funding, and a larger number ask, "What's the point?" Still, despite conflict and unnecessary travails, jazz education fights to persevere in muddled and uncertain times. Like its predecessor 'Stealth Jazz: Behind the Curtain, 'Stealth Jazz Part II' offers largely anecdotal/ opinionated essays, that reject conformity with the same indignation that labeled its author "The Hunter S. Thompson of jazz criticism." Drawing from a career spanning nearly four decades as a world-class educator/ musician, Smith offers insights from places few have traveled, nor would ever want to go, and per the wishes of Miles Davis, is likely to draw an equal amount of praise and repudiation.***Tom Smith is a Downbeat Jazz Education Hall of Fame inductee, an IAJE Ambassador recipient, a six-time Senior Fulbright Professor (Romania), and a Fulbright Specialist (South Africa, Serbia). In 2003, he was awarded the Romanian Radio Prize, co-founded Romania's first music camp/school for jazz, and performed on three of that country's officially designated One Hundred Essential Recordings. In 2010, Tom relocated to China, where he developed a music strategy for teaching English to Mandarin speakers, and in 2011 was hired as Professor of Jazz/American Music Studies at Ningbo University, the first American music professor in Mainland China. He then subsequently wrote that country's curriculum for jazz/popular music education, and in 2013, was awarded the Camellia Prize for significant cultural/entreprenurial contributions. Tom has founded over fifty jazz ensembles on four continents, and is an active performer worldwide, having played trombone, conducted/recorded for scores of iconic musicians. A Brubeck Grant recipient, Tom's publications have been featured on National Public Radio (US), Discovery Channel, and Rutgers Roundtable. He has also contributed to American National Biography, Teaching Music Through Performance in Jazz, Bakers Dictionary, and Oxford Encyclopedia of European Jazz.

- Romania's Surprising Jazz Origins, its Cultural Influences and Analysis of its Written Histories
88,95 kr. THIRD EDITION: Forward by Sarah A. Smith, Jazz was burned into Romania's psyche around 1918, after a great war unified its kingdoms amid totemic change. But through negotiation of multi-veiled alliances, a nation of Romantics gave birth to a jazz subclass directly linked with its classical music. From its juxtaposition with an American hybrid, Romanian jazz revealed a cosmopolitanism different, but equal to what had been found in its literature, architecture and visual arts, eventually aligning with a school of avant-garde fused with patronage. More than a standard accounting, this short tome examines how and why jazz histories are written, influences of race, ethnicity, globalization and revision, and why reporting jazz is so difficult.

263,95 kr. Second Edition: Tom Smith is arguably the most controversial reporter of twenty-first century jazz. He is a world class performer, educator and researcher, who believes jazz is imprisoned by socio-political factions uncaring of art in and of itself. He also rebels against historical revision, political opportunism, and the stifling of innovation. *** This 'best of' collection is extracted from the six books Tom has written for Bunk Johnson Publishing, and will (as always) reveal much of what is seldom told.

- Behind the Curtain
128,95 kr. "If strong intellectual opponents asked me about jazz music, these would be some of my answers." According to Jazz Education Hall of Fame inductee Tom Smith, jazz music's intellectual properties are the sole reason it's unpopular. According to him, the great falsehood about jazz is that its direction is natural, while arguing that all music is susceptible to control, linked to societal concerns we all face. This Third Edition is written in an opinionated tone that is self-deprecating, poignant, auto-biographical, and occasionally funny. Smith eviscerates traditional cathedrals of jazz, from sociologists, to overreaching critics, righteous aficionados, dishonest historians, myopic educators, the wayward musicians he calls 'sheeple, ' and his favored nemesis, Jazz at Lincoln Center, whose contributions (in his estimation) have hurt more than helped. Drawing from a career spanning over four decades as a world-class trombonist, bandleader, researcher/ educator, and builder of jazz programs in several countries, Smith offers insights from places few have traveled, nor would ever want to go. 'Stealth Jazz: Behind the Curtain' is likely to draw equal praise and repudiation, which according to Miles Davis, is exactly where one wishes to be. * * *Tom Smith is a Downbeat Jazz Education Hall of Fame inductee, an IAJE Ambassador recipient, a six-time Senior Fulbright Professor (Romania), and a Fulbright Specialist (South Africa, Serbia). 143,95 kr. From Publishers Weekly: Flying scout helicopters in Vietnam was the aerial counterpart of walking point. Initially cast as target-spotters for gunships and air-assault forces, the scout pilots evolved into live bait as enemy weapons and tactics improved. Their small helicopters were vulnerable even to minor damage, and parachuting from a damaged bird was impossible. Casualty rates could be as high as 50%; a scout unit often resembled a WWI fighter squadron, with replacements dying almost before they could unpack. Yet fresh volunteers kept coming, even if only to stay out of the infantry. In his visceral memoir, Smith tells the familiar story of a young man who flunked out of college, sampled the 1960s counterculture and found himself first in the army, then in Vietnam. For Smith, the war was a theater of the absurd whose only meaning was survival. His narrative of low-altitude, high-risk operations in 1969-70 replicates that of others: initial confusion giving way first to proficiency and pleasure in stalking and killing anonymous enemies, later to a sense that both his skill and his luck are running out. Gritty enough to appeal to adventure fans, this memoir makes a useful contribution to a subject, American helicopter pilots in Vietnam, whose recorded history is largely still in its anecdotal stage.

660,95 kr. This collection presents a summary of current knowledge regarding autistic suspects, defendants and offenders in the criminal justice system of England and Wales. The volume examines the interaction between each stage of the criminal justice process and autistic individuals accused or convicted of crime, considering the problems, strengths and possibilities for improving the system to better accommodate the needs of this vulnerable category of neurodiverse individuals. By explicating the core issues in this important but disparate area of study in a single place, the collection facilitates understanding of and engagement with knowledge for a wider audience of relevant stakeholders, including criminal justice practitioners, policy makers, academics and clinicians. It also incorporates key recommendations for improvement, thereby clarifying the urgent need for substantive change in policies and practices. The ultimate goal is to both improve the treatment and experience of autistic people subjected to criminal justice processes; and produce fairer, more appropriate systemic outcomes. While focused on the criminal justice system of England and Wales, the work will be valuable for researchers and policy makers working in similar systems, as well as those interested in neurodiversity more generally.

93,95 kr. "Spiritual kin to Gertude Stein, Tom Smith exalts in inspired wordplay, running the gamut from sublime nonsense to the most surprising sorts of common sense, so deftly that it's sometimes hard to tell which is which. He is a virtuoso of the ruggedly original." -Harry Smith publishing, poet, essayist (Pulpsmith, The Sexy Sixties) "In Spending the Light we are given…the distilled wisdom and wit and experience of a lifetime, with more than half a century of it devoted to creating memorable and original poetry. There is an extraordinary diversity of form and tone and a rich variety of dramatic voices, not least of which is the clear, strong voice of Tom Smith himself." -George Garrett poet, novelist, author of Whistling in the Dark "These poems sing of the domestic and the familiar and in their quiet power make the humdrum numinous. The poet's facility with simile and metaphor allows quiet observation and wry reaction to soar in significance. His classical allusions escape pedantry and his insights, religious and secular, as well as his uncluttered observation of children, are an important facet of his poetic strength." -David Watmough author of Thy Mother's Glass, Hunting With Diana, et al. "Tom Smith is a poet in Paul Goodman mode-a family man with well-honed peripheral vision. From Spending the Light we discover that changing a life need not mean hiding a life." -Rudy Kikel author of Period Pieces and poetry editor of Bay Windows and The South End News

298,95 kr. Have you ever felt a tension between developing your internal spiritual life and the call to outward service in the world? Those of us who are more naturally activists risk becoming bitter, tired and burned out. Those of us who gravitate toward the contemplative life may struggle to connect our spirituality with the world around us. How do we allow the life of Jesus to flow through our whole bodies into our everyday lives? This book is a result of how Tom Smith held these questions in tension, as Eugene H. Peterson reflects in his foreword:"There is a back story here that is helpful in understanding Tom Smith's fierce focus and energetic imagination. He grew up in South Africa during the years of apartheid. . . . He also was aware that the Rwanda genocide took place in a population mostly Christian. He became a pastor in a flourishing South African church and then came to North America. He experienced the temptation to degenerate church into a consumer program. . . . This book is a witness to what takes place when names trump numbers and stories with their accompanying metaphors keep relationships personal and prayerful."Having Jesus in our hearts is not enough. Jesus calls us to a spirituality that involves our everyday actions and interactions with others and extends our sphere of influence. In this raw, honest, whole-life approach to Christian formation, Tom Smith introduces us into a "rhythm of life" that that brings flourishing to our personal spirituality that then extends to our service in the world.
