David Barringer is a defence barrister and is congratulating himself on a brilliant performance which has just seen Rick Spectre acquitted of murder. His ego is pricked by Margaret Spectre confessing to him that Spectre was guilty. The man himself boasts of it to Barringer a day or two later. Cue moral crisis and a vow never to defend anyone again unless he is sure of their innocence. Spectre himself then dies and Barringer believes he perjures himself in giving evidence at the inquest. He believes Margaret has killed her husband. Margaret is withdrawn and indifferent towards life, taking advantage of the things money can provide her, but not enjoying them. Barringer feels the stirring of an attraction. We then cross paths with Sir. Phillip Cross, who openly mocks David when he declares war on criminals...."I am not going to be content with a negative position as regards evildoers. I am going to set my heel on as many of the human vermin of this city as I can find." Cross it turns out is-Margaret Spectre's father. After crossing verbal swords (an argument of sorts), Cross prophesises that within a few yards of the bar they are in, later tonight a crime will be committed. As if by magic, a murder occurs and Barringer factoring in Cross's seedy reputation on some quarters.....he's murdered someone abroad, he holds lavish orgies at the walled mansion on the banks of the river.... gets it into his head that Cross is a criminal mastermind. This is the story of a Mob Hit. If the seven sequences were ordered chronologically, they would run: 1, 4a, 2, 6,, 3, 4b, 5, 7. Sequences 1 and 7 partially overlap and are presented from different points of view, as do sequences 2 and 6. In the description, the structural form is "an episodic narrative with circular events adding a beginning and end and allowing references to elements of each separate episode to be made throughout the narrative." Other analysts describe the structure as a "circular narrative". Enjoy.

How far is a mother prepared to go to secure her daughter's future? Madame L'ourse, widow of an eminent chemist, has both the determination and the cunning to bring young Babette's marriage plans to fruition, with dangerous consequences for anyone who dares to stand in her way. But has she met her match in Jack Straw, one-time inmate of Bedlam lunatic asylum? It will take a visit to the morgue to find out who The title of this 1970s novel is a little deceptive. The well-chosen cover picture obviously represents the Lucrecia of the title -- Madame L'ourse, a middle-aged but still fearsomely attractive German widow of a French doctor -- and indeed she is the centre of this excitingly dark narrative. Her daughter Babette does have a part to play in the story, and indeed her desire to get married to a young German businessman is central to the plot, but Babette herself remains a rather shadowy figure around all the dodgy deeds committed by her powerful parent. The story is mostly narrated by a young Englishman, David Glenney, but mainly takes place in Germany, the home of young Fritz Keller, who lives with his father and helps to run his business. Unfortunately for Fritz, Mr Keller disapproves deeply of his son's choice of bride -- not that there's anything wrong with Babette herself, who is a pretty, quiet and virtuous girl. But Madame L'ourse has a bad reputation and we soon discover that it's well-deserved. She has got herself into deep debt by frittering away all her husband's slender earnings, and even worse rumours are circulating of possible dark deeds.

Some of the characters are a combination of several people; this allows a consolidation for literary efficiency The names of living policemen and all others involved, have been changed to protect the privacy of those who were there. The City of Santa Rosa best duplicates the actual background for this tale of a truly innocent young man arrested and indicted for a crime he REALLY DIDN'T COMMIT. This is the story of what, after the the French revolution, became known as the Reign of Terror or The Terror (French: la Terreur) is the label given by some historians to a period during the French Revolution. Several historians consider the "reign of terror" to have begun in 1793, placing the starting date at either 5 September, June or March (birth of the Revolutionary Tribunal), while some consider it to have begun in September 1792 (September Massacres), or even July 1789 (when the first decapitations took place), but there is a general consensus that it ended with the fall of Robespierre in July 1794 Between June 1793 and the end of July 1794, there were 16,594 official death sentences in France, of which 2,639 were in Paris However, the total number of deaths in France was much higher, owing to death in imprisonment, suicide and casualties in foreign and civil war. Robespierre in February 1794 in a speech explained the necessity of terror: If the basis of popular government in peacetime is virtue, the basis of popular government during a revolution is both virtue and terror; virtue, without which terror is baneful; terror, without which virtue is powerless. Terror is nothing more than speedy, severe and inflexible Justice; it is thus an emanation of virtue; it is less a principle in itself, than a consequence of the general principle of democracy, applied to the most pressing needs of the patrie [homeland, fatherland]. Some historians argue that such terror was a necessary reaction to the circumstances. Others suggest there were also other causes, including ideological and emotional. Out of England would come a man known as the "Bleue Flamme" Who risk his life to make a difference for the innocent, This is his story.

Recently released from prison, Don McMacnus visits his old friend Kurt Stahr. Although it is the day of his daughter's wedding, Stahr agrees to an audience with Emanuel Johnston, the criminal and copkiller with whom he has some business. McMacnus wanders into the garden and a tornado of fury sweeps through him. The debonair Major Bragg, the new husband to whom Stahr has entrusted his precious daughter, is a fraudster of the most sinister kind. With Room 13 in 1974 we introduce readers to Mr. Barnabus Phyff, one of the least glamorous of all fictional detectives. Mr. Barnabus Phyff is neither a police detective nor an amateur crimefighter, nor is he a private detective. In fact he's employed by the Bank of England, and acts as a kind of consultant to Scotland Yard. He's a shabby rather timid little man in his 60s, and even the thought of handling firearms appalls him. He's hesitant and vague in manner and sees slightly dotty. He also has one of the sharpest brains in the country and an encyclopedic knowledge of criminals and crime. British prisons contain many wrongdoers who made the mistake of not taking Mr. Barnabus Phyff seriously. There are in fact two heroes in this book, the other being a certain Captain Don McMacnus. Don is a gentleman, and he's also a criminal. He's serving a sentence at Dartmoor Prison for some rather shady dealings on the racetrack. He keeps going by thinking of the girl he hopes to marry. She's the daughter of retired bank robber Kurt Stahr, although she has no idea of her father's villainous past. Don is devastated when he received the news that the lovely Melora is to marry a Canadian officer, and even more upset when upon his release from prison he discovers that this Canadian officer is neither an officer, nor a gentleman, nor a Canadian. There is a dastardly plot afoot, and it involves both a vast counterfeiting ring and an old criminal's quest for revenge on the man he believes betrayed him to the police many years earlier. In the first part of the novel, Zo'e's father hires a French governess, Madame de la Raciot, as a companion for her. Madame de la Raciot terrifies Zo'e and appears to have designs on her; during two of their walks together, Zo'e is brought into suspicious contact with strangers that seem to be known to Madame de la Raciot. (In a cutaway scene that breaks the first person narrative, we learn that she is in league with Uncle Ethan's good for nothing son D'uva.) The governess is eventually dismissed when she is discovered by Zo'e in the act of burgling her father's desk. Zo'e is asked in obscure terms by her father if she is willing to undergo some kind of "ordeal" to clear the name of her uncle, and of the family more generally; shortly after she assents, he dies. At the reading of his will, it emerges that her father added a codicil to it: Zo'e is to stay with Uncle Ethan until she comes of age; if she dies whilst still a minor, the estate will pass to Ethan. Madame Coustoes, together with Jacob's executor and fellow Swedenborgian, Dr. Bacak, attempt in vain to overturn the codicil, realizing its many dangerous implications for the young heiress; despite their efforts, Zo'e consents willingly to spending the next three and a half years at her uncle's mansion at Goiswinth Keep. Followed By Greed, Avoris, Terror, Kidnapping False imprisonment, Murder, Suicide, and a list of other sins too numorous to mention.

This is the story of the birth of Christ and those who journeyed to his birth place, to be the first the worship him. This story is to fill in the blanks between the Bible and secular history. There will be no major revaltions or here-to-fore unheard of miracles. Did you ever wonder how the three wise men got together from Countries spread across the known world apart, and set on a mission? Did you ever wonder who took care of the shepards sheep as they abandoned them to take up the quest? Do you think that Mary and Joseph might not have had some "dicey" encounters on their journey to be counted? Do you think Jesus was born in a stable with a roof and doors? How much trouble did they have finding some shelter. Hopefully you'll come away from these hundred pages saying "Yaugh, that makes sence."
