The Distress'd Wife is a play written by John Gay in the 18th century. The story revolves around the unhappy marriage of Lord and Lady Trifle. Lady Trifle is deeply unhappy in her marriage and seeks comfort in the arms of other men. Her husband, on the other hand, is oblivious to her unhappiness and is more concerned with his own affairs. The play explores themes of infidelity, love, and the societal expectations placed on women in the 18th century. It is a satirical piece that pokes fun at the upper class and their frivolous lifestyles. The play was first performed in 1715 and was well-received by audiences of the time. It remains a classic piece of literature and is still studied and performed today.Bart. I find you have the Use of your Reason when your Wife is not by; consider yourself as a Man, and consider her as a Woman, and you may have it then too.--You were born to Freedom, and would you seek to make yourself a Slave? You were born to Fortune, and would you stoop to make yourself a Beggar? That when I die this word may stand for me- He had a heart to praise, an eye to see, And beauty was his king. Dead at the age of thirty-one after a sudden operation, Claud Lovat Fraser was as surely a victim of the war as though he had fallen in action. He was full of vigour for his work, but shell-shock had left him with a heart that could not stand a strain of this kind, and all his own fine courage could not help the surgeons in a losing fight. We are not sorry for him-we learn that, not to be sorry for the dead. But for ourselves? This terror is always so fresh, so unexampled. I had telephoned to him to ask whether he would help me in a certain theatrical enterprise. I was told by his servant that he was ill, but one hears these things so often that one gave but little thought to it beyond sending a telegram asking for news; and now this. Personal griefs are of no public interest, but here is as sad a public loss as has befallen us, if the world can measure truly, in our generation.

The Beggar's Opera is a ballad opera in three acts written in 1728 by John Gay with music arranged by Johann Christoph Pepusch. It is one of the watershed plays in Augustan drama and is the only example of the once thriving genre of satirical ballad opera to remain popular today. Ballad operas were satiric musical plays that used some of the conventions of opera, but without recitative. The lyrics of the airs in the piece are set to popular broadsheet ballads, opera arias, church hymns and folk tunes of the time. The Beggar's Opera premiered at the Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre on 29 January 1728 and ran for 62 consecutive performances, the longest run in theatre history up to that time (after 146 performances of Robert Cambert's "Pomone" in Paris in 1671). The work became Gay's greatest success and has been played ever since; it has been called "the most popular play of the eighteenth century." In 1920, The Beggar's Opera began an astonishing revival run of 1,463 performances at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith, London, which was one of the longest runs in history for any piece of musical theatre at that time.
